SPHSC 308-Student Objectives
- Students will understand the components of communication.
- Students will be able to define ethnography and phenomenology.
- Students will define/explain systems and systems theory
- Students will apply systems theory to understanding communicative/social issues in their lives and the lives of others (e.g., within family context; academic system; relationships)
- Students will grapple with the terms "culture" and cultural practices" and define them.
- Students will appreciate cultural diversity across and within groups, understanding the concept of
acculturation.
- Students will appreciate diversity in communication as a reflection of diversity in culture.
- Students will appreciate similarities and differences in development across cultural groups.
- Students will understand the WHO/ICF Model
- Students will understand that individuals (and their families) must be regarded as unique individuals as professionals conduct their assessments and provide treatment. Multicultural issues should become one of the many variables that are considered during assessment and treatment.
- Students will develop an understanding of some of the strategies that can be beneficial in the therapeutic relationship to address cultural considerations.
- Students will learn basic style guidelines for scientific writing.
