Following a workshop organized at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in November 2010, we’ve initiated a new project looking at the physiological basis for drought tolerance in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The first experiments have been conducted by UW undergraduate Darshi Banan, funded by HHMI. He has developed a method for scoring ‘fidelity’ of sun-tracking, and has also carried out some growth assays for bean leaf responses to ABA. Seeds of lines differing in drought tolerance were provided by CIAT and are being tested in the greenhouse over the summer.
