Sharon joined the Burke Museum as the Genetic Resources Manager in 1998 after receiving her Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1996. Her research is on the evolution of birds, with an emphasis on reproductive behavior, mating systems, and the use of molecular techniques – especially within the avian family Megapodiidae (the megapodes).

The Burke Genetic Resources Collection is one of the largest of its type in the world, with tissues from more than 35,000 birds, 7,000 mammals, and 2,000 reptiles and amphibians.
