Recent responsibilities

 

OSLIS Project:   This is portal to databases, information, and citation tools for Oregon students. It is  a website designed for K-12 students and educators integrating information literacy with access to licensed databases. 2003-2008

DIRECTED FIELD WORK: Placing  students, communicating with hosts, mentoring and assessing students work, networking with various information environments. The MLIS program is a globally-recognized program that educates students for careers and leadership roles in the library and information professions. This provides students with the professional skills, experiences and orientation necessary and appropriate for entry-level positions

TEACHING: Areas of interest: school libraries, Instructional training strategies and Information literacy

WLMA (Washington Library Media Association) Higher Education Chair. Board member: conference planner and program evaluator since 2003-2008

DIVERSITY COMMITTEES: member of  both the school and University  committee.The Diversity Committee is dedicated to the promotion of diversity at the Information School and the University of Washington. Through efforts in many areas, including outreach, recruitment, and retention, the committee works to foster an openness regarding diverse ideas and perspectives.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE: Chair

ISERVE: faculty advisor. iServe is an iSchool group and listserv for volunteer and service opportunities related to the information professions.

IYOUTH: faculty advisor. Iyouth is open to anyone interested in sharing knowledge about youth-related issues in libraries. The purpose is to create a network of colleagues to be used as a resource for questions, ideas, and events relating to children's and young adult services in libraries.

Lorraine Bruce is a senior lecturer in the Information School at the University of Washington. Lorraine has extensive experience working closely with teachers to integrate technology, higher order thinking and information skills into the curriculum. Her interests are Instruction training strategies for Information Professionals and she teaches this core class. She is the faculty member responsible for supervising all Directed Field Work within the school. Recently she has been  working on a funded contract from the Oregon State Library to redesigning the web site for the Oregon School Library Information System.  Lorraine has been involved with the Rapid Library Transformation Program in Seattle Schools with Dean Mike Eisenberg. She has worked on a Five year project to improve information literacy strategies for students of families in Transition. She has presented and written on this topic. She has written and presented for the Smart Tools Academy, which promotes the use of technology among school administrators. Lorraine also provides outreach consulting to the Seattle Schools district. She has designed delivered workshops in information literacy for Bellevue Community College. Lorraine has recently been invited to give presentations to the Seattle School District, Puget Sound ESD, The Whidbey Island SD, Wyoming, Arizona, Gig Harbor, Kitsap Peninsula,  she is a regular presenter Washington Library Media Association (WLMA) conferences and the Teachers as Scholars Program. She is the academic co chair for WLMA in the State of Washington. She is a certified Big 6 trainer.
