Course Description
This
course is primarily designed for students interested in acquiring a solid
reading knowledge of Spanish, and to facilitate the understanding and
translating of Spanish texts dealing with a variety of disciplines. It thus
employs a more traditional, grammar-based approach, designed to develop basic
reading and translating abilities in Spanish. In order to support these
abilities, students will be introduced to a variety of grammar topics as well
as technical and academic texts from various fields within the Humanities. If
your goal is to prepare for a language exam in your department, please provide
me with as much information as possible about that exam. No prior experience
with Spanish is necessary for SPAN 308. Not open to Spanish majors or
minors. Does not serve as a prerequisite for any higher-level Spanish courses
or fulfill any undergraduate foreign language requirement. Class will be
conducted in English. Auditors are not permitted.
The
Spanish for Reading courses are offered sequentially: 308, winter quarter; 309,
spring quarter. Students who take 308
are also expected to take 309 the following quarter to complete their
requirement. Students who did not take
308 cannot take 309.
The
use of Internet resources will be an important part of this course. Students
will be required to access the instructor’s Web page:
http://faculty.washington.edu/lbm where translation exercises, verb conjugations
and grammar points are posted.
