Creating an Access Database: A Primer for Resource Center Managers

 by
Laura C. Larsson

Abstract

Target Audience:

The solo librarian (or information coordinator) in a small, often underfunded, information center can rarely afford to purchase special software for use in managing serials. Fortunately, with a little planning and several (actually quite a few) hours of work, he or she can create a useable serials database which can be used to maintain records on any aspect of serials maintenance and check-in using Microsoft Access 97. Students will learn how to build entity relationship diagrams to relate one table to another. As important as building the database is the ability to retrieve information. Participants in the workshop will learn how to create queries and reports of various kinds. Participants will learn by doing.
