Fonte delle Sperandie

Fonte delle SperandieWe are not certain of the date of construction for this fountain, but there is a notice of its having been restored in 1330. Its name comes from its proximity to the Benedictine convent of Saint Agnes, also known as Sperandie, which later took the name of Trafisse. Now one reaches the fountain by the Via delle Sperandie. It is furnished with a bottino, or rather an overflow pipe, that reaches the Tressa stream just outside the city. The fountain is seen from a large niche, from which, across a passage now protected by a grate, it is adjacent to a large underground basin. On the wall at the base of the niche one notes an inscription that records the cleaning of the bottino that feeds the fountain on ". . . 15 September 1724 by the nun in charge, Domina Maria Piccolomini".
