Fonte dell'Orto Botanico (Botanical Garden)
Also known as the Fonte al Pino, one arrives at this pretty fountain passing from via Mattioli and going through the paths of the Botanical Garden
along the valley between via Mattioli on the east and via delle Sperandie to the west, bordered on the north by via delle Cerchia and on the south by the section of wall that connects Porta Tufi with Porta San Marco.
The fountain is very beautiful and is composed of two distinct sections: one higher up, with two wide arches; the other, the basin, situated outside the first and at a lower level, in the ground. It is difficult to establish the era of its construction (as is the case with all the minor fountains) but a clue might be given if the family crest (stemma), could be identified: it contains a band accompanied by two lilies but has been rendered almost illegible by incrustations of calcites. Certainly this fountain is visible on Francesco Vanni's seventeenth-century plan of Siena.
