Fonte delle Monache
It is known as the Fountain of the Monks of San Paolo, a name that derives from one of two monastic complexes (The Augustine Monastery of San Paulo and the Benedictine Sisters of Sant'Agnese,
also called Sperandie) that one finds next to each other, along the via delle Sperandie; the one that gives its name to the road is built along the city wall, the other is about halfway down the road.
This fountain, called delle Monache di San Paolo was until now unknown, being jealously hidden in the hillside under the road. It is fed by a bottino that collects water from the immediate vicinity, and it is quite large and striking in its appearance, situated a dozen meters under the former convent. It is composed of one large room in the form of a parallelepiped of about seven meters in length and five in width, with a height of about seven and a half meters. It receives light from a little window at the top of the ceiling vault. It is a very beautiful and suggestive fountain that now is the object of a complex restoration project. This fountain's worth has been recognized thanks to the work of members of the Diana Association. In fact, volunteers from the Diana not only rediscovered the fountain's location, but have begun the work of restoration. Upon discovery the fountain was in the worst possible condition, the interior almost completely filled with numerous cubic meters of refuse and mud; various members took on the laborious task of removing the debris and cleaning the interior. Now the work of restoration is in the hands of preservation and design professionals, and one day, the area will become part of tourist itinerary including the valley below and the fountain of the Botanical Garden, called the Fonte dell'Orto Botanico.
