Weber, Alfred

German economist and location theorist. Brother of Max Weber. Made significant contributions to the development of industrial location theory in his book (1909) Ueber den Standort der Industrien (Engl. Title: Theories of the Location of Industries). (More here). However, major ideas originate with Wilhelm Launhardt (1885).

Weight-loss ratio

An important concept in Alfred Weber's theory of location: The relative loss in weight of production inputs during the production process. A large weight-loss ratio will favor (proximity to) the source location(s) of the materials for the location of the production activity ("material orientation") in order to save transport costs.

WTO

World Trade Organization (since January 1995)
