• GDP [Gross Domestic Product (Glossary)] Value of all the goods and services produced by workers and capital physically located within a country (or region), such as the United States, regardless of nationality of workers or ownership. In December 1991, the Bureau of Economic Analysis began using the GDP rather than the GNP as the primary measure of United States production.

• GNP [Gross National Product] "The Gross National Product (GNP) is the total dollar value of all final goods and services produced for consumption in society during a particular time period. Its rise or fall measures economic activity based on the labor and production output within a country...." GNP includes all factor incomes of residents earned outside the country concerned and, consequently, does not include factor incomes earned in the domestic market by foreigners.

  The gross domestic product (GDP), the total output of goods and services, grew at a 3.3 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said. Analysts expected a 2.2 percent gain. GDP growth in the second quarter was 1.8 percent.

    The efficiency of American workers surged at a 6.4 percent rate in the final three months of 1999, marking the strongest jump in productivity growth in seven years, the government reported today. That revised estimate pushed productivity growth for all of last year to 3 percent, slightly better than the government previously thought. It was the best showing on workers' efficiency gains since a 4.1 percent increase in 1992.

    The rate jumped from 4.3 percent in December to 5.2 percent in January, but that was still the lowest January rate since recordkeeping began in 1947.... The rate was 5.3 percent during the Korean War in 1951, and 5.6 percent in 1966 at the height of the "Boeing Boom." Seasonally adjusted, the statewide jobless rate inched up two-tenths of a percentage point to 4.5 percent, compared with 4.0 percent nationally.
