GS197 Freshman Seminar: 3rd Week

Raise this week's page on your computer in Netscape or Explorer.

Today's tasks: Create or transfer some content in(to) your home page and use a "search engine":

  1. Recall your public_html subdirectory (cd public_html). Once there, open an "empty" new file, call it "intro.html" and type: pico intro.html . Type or "copy & paste" the following code at the top of this page:

    Now either write two sentences about your background (whatever you feel comfortable with) and separate this paragraph from the next by typing: <P> [P stands for "paragraph" and will insert some extra space between your two paragraphs] Then write two short sentences about your academic and career plans (again, only what you feel comfortable with).

    Alternatively, you can "copy and paste" what you may already have contributed on our "Discussion Page" http://faculty.washington.edu/krumme/discuss/discuss.html: Click, highlight your contribution, go to EDIT, then "copy", go to your open "intro.html" file in dante and "paste" it into the right place.

    Then, finish your newly created page by closing the code from the top of page:

  2. Now we want to link this new file to your already existing file index.html
    I suggest we create a table of contents in this existing file and insert it underneath the <hr> [i.e.the horizontal line which looks like this:]
    close to the bottom of the already existing code:
    Click here and copy all of the code contained in this page (directly via Netscape or via "View" & "Source" in Explorer).

    This is what it will look like once you have done it:

  3. If there is some time left, we will begin our discussion of the use of "search engines". For starters, let's search for "telecommuting" or "telework" which are phenomena relating to a wide variety of social science issues.
    Work in groups of 2 or 3 and use your (or partner's) favorite search engine (or pick a search engine from this list. Identify, copy and share the "URL" of the sites you find via our class discussion page. Also indicate whether these sites:
    1. merely provide links to other sites
    2. document/describe the incidence of telecommuting or telework
    3. address the advantages or
    4. drawbacks/constraints of telecommuting or telework
    Please also indicate the name of the search engine you used and identify all members of your group. Thanks!

  4. If you have time between now and next Wednesday, you may want to return to your Web directory and your home page file and practice your newly learned skills. Open your Dante account, and type in "S" (Shell) at your first menu. Then type "cd public_html", then: "pico index.html" (to open your initial file), etc.

    To close the file and get out of Dante: Type Ctrl X, "Yes", "Enter", then, at the prompt, type: exit.
