BYLAWS OF THE ASSOCIATION OF WASHINGTON GEOGRAPHERS (2003)
Article I. Name
This organization shall be known as the Association of Washington Geographers.
Article II. Purpose
Article III. Membership
Section 1. Membership shall be open to anyone who holds a degree in geography or related field, who is employed as a geographer, or who has an interest in geography.
Section 2. Only regular members in good standing shall be eligible to vote or hold office.
Section 3. Student membership shall be available to anyone regularly enrolled as a major in geography or related field at either the graduate or undergraduate levels. Student members shall have all privileges of regular members.
Article IV. Organization
Section 1. The elected officers shall be a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary, and a Treasurer. The duties of these four (4) officers shall be those normally assigned to the positions, with the addition that the Vice-President will also serve on the Board of the Washington Geographic Alliance.
Section 2. The four elected officers, together with the past-president, a representative appointed from the Washington Geographic Alliance, and five (5) other members to be selected by the membership, shall serve as the Board for a total of eleven (11) members. Every effort will be made to guarantee that the Board contains adequate representation from all parts of our membership both geographically and by interest in furthering geography. To help in attaining this goal, of the five other Board seats, one (1) seat shall be reserved for a member from an institution that grants baccalaureate degrees in Geography or allied subject, one (1) for a member from a two-year degree granting institution (commonly defined as a Community College), and one (1) for a member working outside of academia (commonly defined as a Professional Geographer). The Board shall be empowered to act on behalf of the Association, subject to the right of the full membership to overturn its actions.
Section 3. Officers shall be elected by a majority vote of the members attending an annual meeting and will serve for 2 years in their elected position. The President-elect/Vice-President will automatically succeed to the office of the President. Non-officers, on the Board shall serve for two years. Other vacancies as they occur shall be filled by appointment by the Board.
Section 4. The President or the Board may appoint such committees as are needed in the conduct of Association business.
Section 5. The membership year and the calendar year shall run January 1 through December 31.
Section 6. Dues may be changed by a majority vote of members in attendance at any regular meeting. Student dues shall be 50% of the regular dues.
Article V. Meetings
Section 1. A meeting for the purpose of electing officers shall be held at a biannual meeting. Date of such meetings shall be set by the Board.
Section 2. Other meetings may be called at the discretion of a majority of the Board, and notification sent to the membership not less than 30 days prior to the meeting date.
Section 3. Board meetings will be scheduled by the President or a majority of the Board as needed.
Article VI. Amendments
Section 1. Amendments to the bylaws may be proposed by the Board or by petition of any five regular members to the Board. Proposed amendments shall be circulated to the membership with the notice of meeting at which passage is sought.
Section 2. Amendments shall become effective upon a majority vote of the membership in attendance and voting at any regular meeting of the Association.
