The content contained in this outline largely originated in earlier years. This year's content plans will be suggested and discussed in class. This outline will be updated as early as possible before and after workshop meetings as the quarter evolves.

First Week (October 1st)
We will meet in the Geography Collaboratory (Smith 415, Room in the back to the left) at 2:30

Introductions
Economic & Business Geography
Class Logistics (incl. Collaboration, E-Mail and the Internet)

The Three Components of this Workshop:

Online discussion of issues related to "Emerging Spatial Structures in Cyber-Age".
Toward a "Geography of the Information Economy"
Students' own research interests

This Seminar and the Internet: Objectives

Logistic

Enable students (and faculty) to organize their daily logistics more efficiently in time & space

Educational (incl. student research)

Promote collaboration and acquisition of teamwork skills
Integrate the learning of a broader range of library- and internet related resource skills into the presentation of subject areas
Enable students to gain valuable computer communication skills
Facilitate boundary-spanning communication and activities between disciplines and, as importantly, between class and community. In Economic Geography, such activities include student research, internships and Service Learning / Community Outreach arrangements.
Provide opportunity to students to experiment with hypertextual presentation of projects

Pedagogic

Add diversity to the presentation of class content (in addition to the use of lectures, in-class discussions and hard-copy readings)
Facilitate and improve outside-class communication between instructor and students
Provide a seminar or small group atmosphere for discussion even in larger classes and encourage participation of students who might otherwise not participate
Accommodate special needs of a student population with highly diverse backgrounds and skill levels (i.e. create multi-level learning environments)

Introduce yourself! (including by E-mail, before next week's meeting)

Select one of the following:

a substantial and substantive digital (Internet) document,
a book
two or more chapters in an edited book
two or more journal articles
for a review (See guidelines.)

The Collaboratory will be open to Geog.498 students 1/2 hour before class starts on Wednesdays. It is also available to 498 students during regular hours without formally scheduled classes on a first-come-first-served basis.
Second Week (Wednesday, Oct. 8)
- 2:30-5:00 in Smith 415
- Due: Digital Introduction: While this statement can initially be sent by E-mail, it will eventually be integrated into your Web-Portfolio. Those of you who are ready to do so, may want to present themselves on the Web rightaway. In order to join our "Intranet", be sure you open a special "498" directory and then call first week's file "1" or 1.html depending on whether it is in "text" or "html". The full address would then be:

  I also suggest that we make our contributions available by Tuesday nights at the latest.
There will be two "mandatory" activities for our workshop today, namely
1. How do we expand on the major ideas presented in our digital introductions? A "Hypertextual" Discussion!
2. Selection of our book or document for the forthcoming "review". Discussion of these selections.

Research Design
Intermission: During part of the break, I would like to talk to the undergraduate majors about possibilities of combining 498-work with some Internet-project of the UGA (Undergrad Geography Association).

Tentative Agenda:

Discussion of initial project ideas
Research Process and Methods
Home Page Presentation Issues: HTML, Hypertext, Collaboration etc.

Preparation:

Project ideas and initial literature search
Undust, assemble and review all materials you have on research process and methods
1. background information related to your specific area of research interests
2. materials related to the process of conceptualization and developing conceptual frameworks (in general and specifically related to your project)
3. literature and class notes (etc.) related to methodology (quantitative or qualitative research methods) appropriate for your project (whether you are actually planning empirical research for this quarter or not)
4. materials related to other backgrounds and skills which may be important for your project (e.g. bibliographic skills)
Home page: What are your next steps? (identify gaps and bottlenecks which might slow down your home page project)
Among the pages you want to develop now may be the following:
1. a "cover page" with a text statement as to what you plan to accomplish, why you are interested in this topic or issue, and, in general terms, how you anticipate accomplishing the appropriate tasks. This page may also serve as the table of contents with "clickable" references to future project components ("documents").
2. a page introducing your "field" or "area of concentration" within which you plan to pursue your project
3. a "resource page" with different types of "items" (literature, internet sites etc.) relevant for your project
4. an outline or "map" or "time line" of your project plans

Stages in the Research Process
Writing in "Blocks", modules or "Hypertext" [I started to compile a Bibliography on Hypertext Writing]
General discussion of project- and research design Readings: Handouts from last week!
Exploration of project-related resources. I encourage you to make an appointment with our Geography Librarian Anne Zald if you have any question about Library or Internet resources we cannot handle in class or my office. Anne is also developing a Geography Data Resource Base which includes economic data. Her office hours and office location are part of a recent memo from her.
