Winters" To: econgeog@u.washington.edu Cc: debw@u.washington.edu Subject: submittal of red/blue contribution Red List: Port Competition Aspects: locational friction, hinterland dependencies, (I'm also interested in the effect of Colonialism with respect to port development and competition, but I'm not sure yet how to tie it in - perhaps uneven development? underdevelopment?) Partial Resource List: Journal of Transport Geography - The Emergence of Post-Modernism on the Urban Waterfront - Interport Competition in Developing Countries: An East African Case Study - Transportation Geography and Geographic thought in the United States, An Overview Canadian Transport Logistics - The New Size and Shape of Shipping - Economy Ahoy!: A Ports Report Journal of Development Economics - The Role of Ports in the Making of Major Cities: Self Agglomeration and the Hub-effect Port Development by Roy MacElwee Numerous articles from Journal of Commerce and Commercial Blue List: Interdependency Yes, I know it's not on the "Official" Blue List, but it is certainly an interesting and relevant topic. The only drawback is the size of the topic, so I shall narrow it to Interdependencies in Aspects of Transportation. (I also believe I can coherently tie this subject in with port competition (and colonialism?).) There are many facets of transportation which are mutually dependent upon one another for the wheels of our economy to turn smoothly. It applies at uppermost levels such as whether or not to pass the new RTA initiatives (legislative), to the (individual) decision to take a bike to work to reduce traffic congestion (and polluted air). From the decision of what size of container to transport, to how it will be transported. Dependencies are everywhere.
