Subject: Day of Reflection and Engagement

Dear Members of the University of Washington community:

        On Thursday, October 11th, the University will hold a Day of
Reflection and Engagement. The purpose of the day will be to focus the
attention and energy of our entire community on issues related to the
tragic events of September 11th and to afford everyone on our three
campuses an opportunity to discuss and assess the meaning of these
despicable events that so devastated our nation and world. All three
campuses will observe the Day of Reflection and Engagement by holding
special sessions--lectures, workshops and moderated discussions--on these
vitally important subjects.  Although the University will remain open
during the day, I am suspending all regular classes on October 11th from
9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to ensure the fullest possible participation by
students, faculty and staff.
