Date: Wed, 12 Mar 1997 07:47:15 -0800 (PST) From: Economic Geography To: Economic Geography Subject: Geog207: Towards Finals ("Last Rites"). Hi: First of all, especially for those who have not heard it yet: This was a tremendous effort on your part last Monday! I was thoroughly impressed by the general organization and content of your Web sites and by your willingness to present and share them. Thanks! I hope you enjoyed it at least half as much as I did... Of course, we could have used much more time ..., and I apologize to those of you who may feel that we were not able to pay sufficient attention to your creations and formulations... As I told you, the final evaluation of the sites will begin Friday after 6pm. Until then, our helpers and I will continue to be available in the Collaboratory and by E-mail with assistance and suggestions (see time schedules!).... If you want to show me and discuss your page, individually or as a group, there will be time for that, too, before or after Friday. My only (repeat) requests at this point: Please insert appropriate subheadings into your case study (repeated in the Table of Contents), and be sure your citations of/references to sources are complete AND you have thoroughly proofread your text (unless you have done all these things already). If you wish to continue to research your topic or be involved in "Geographic Internet" matters in the future (and get credit for it), .... talk to me (Geography 350 and 498/499 both Spring and Fall are possibilities; there are also volunteer Internet opportunities on and off-campus). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Make-Up Midterm will probably not be returned before the finals. (It was a "make-up", and I am simply running out of time). However, feel free to try to get some feedback from me, in person or by E-mail.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finals: 1. B.Y.O.B.B. (Bring your own Blue Book [and Notebook], please) 2. I have decided that you deserve more time per question on the Finals. Thus, there will be only two questions (with some choice for each) for which you would have an hour each. These questions will be relatively comprehensive, but will require the use (explanation and application) of specific concepts. Thus, there will be the need to organize your answers (reports or essays) well before you start writing. Most of the questions will have components which we have covered already on the Midterm, short + essay questions. However, now, the/a more general context will also be part of the question. In my humble opinion, the best preparation for these tasks is to formulate your own questions (as many as possible, with the help of earlier, incl. past years' questions), organize and outline your answers, actually write out a few of them, and present and discuss one or two of your answers in a study group meeting. (Do not hesitate to come to me with questions you could not solve in your study group!). You can use a one-piece "notebook" (ringbinder) during the finals. Of course, I need to warn you that it will be too late to organize this notebook during the finals .... and you should not overestimate (or excessively rely on) the usefulness of this notebook. An "End-of-Quarter Evaluation Form" of your technology and Internet experiences in this class will be distributed on Friday and needs to be returned at the time of the finals. Again B.Y.O.B.B. See you in class. G.K.
