integrated dance
training and composition

A number of different courses in Integrated Dance have been offered at the University of Washington over the past years. Additionally Jürg Koch has also been working with volunteer members from the community in an ad hoc company called the workshop. The pieces created with this group have been included in the annual Faculty Dance Concert since Spring 2005. To get and overview of past pieces please use the archive link on the left.

It is at the heart of Integrated Dance to bring members from different communities together to create and work with diversity as a driving force in the process. For this course this means that UW students taking the class for credit are joined by a number of additional dancers from the wider community.

UW Students
UW students taking this course for credit should familiarize themselves with all the resources (syllabus, term plan and questionnaire) on the left hand side of this page. Besides the regular contact hours, please pay particular attention to performance and showing times. Taking this course for credit means that you also fulfill a number of requirements including some writing, please consult the syllabus for further information. The first day of the course for you is on Wednesday, September 24 from 6-8 in Meany Studio 267.

Community Participants
You are an integral part of this course. There are five places open to members of the community, which are allocated on a first come basis (I will also keep a waiting list and confirm your participation within the first week of meeting.) Please familiarize yourself with the term plan to ensure you are available for the entire rehearsal and performance process. Please contact the instructor, Jürg Koch (kochj@u.washington.edu, 206 616 75 61), to indicate your interest, ask questions or register.

Participant comments:
"This course really stretched my thinking and my abilities in terms of technique and choreography."

"It was valuable to be pushed individually to move in new and different ways...to be pushed outside a comfort zone."

"The class was very challenging and it forced me to try new and scary things and I loved it!"

Read Nancy Joseph's article (Perspectives, Nov. 2004) for some more insight on the courses.
