dance 235 integrated dance: technique and composition

...an interest in the diversity of human expression

M/W 6.00-8.00

Meany Hall, Studio 267

3 credits

Integrated Dance strives to find ways of teaching and creating dance that are suitable for diverse groups of participants. It does this with regards to their previous dance experience, as well as their physical and conceptual abilities. The emphasis is on training dance skills and setting creative tasks that access and challenge each individual dancer's facilities and abilities.

Course Overview

This course gives a praxis-oriented insight into Integrated Dance. Using movement vocabulary and working processes informed by modern and contemporary dance, we train and create together as a company. The group you will be working with, consists both of UW students and community participants. The course invites you to explore and develop your individual abilities within dance. There are several integral aspects to the course:

Technical Warm Up
We establish a shared warm up process, preparing us both physically and mentally for the creative and performance work. In the warm up we will be use both set and improvisational techniques.

Creative tasks
By setting and developing specific creative tasks, we gradually establish movement material to be included in the performance piece. These tasks include solo as well as partner and group work.

Performance
The piece we s
et and rehearse will be performed to an audience towards the end of the quarter (November 21 and 22 tbc). Performing in the concert and taking part in all spacing, technical and dress rehearsals is an integral part of the course.

Writing
You are expected to reflect on the creative process, diversity, access and inclusion through several reflective writing tasks.
Guidelines and information about writing tasks are available through the catalyst tool Collect It.

At the beginning of the quarter more time will be dedicated to the warm up and creative tasks. Over time the emphasis will shift towards rehearsing and staging the emerging dance piece. As the instructor I take responsibility for initiating, structuring and coordinating the creative and rehearsal process, a process, which also heavily relies on your ideas, contributions and consistent performance. To avoid any scheduling conflicts, please consult the term plan.

Class Questionnaire
We all have different circumstances. Individuals may need accommodations to work with the course procedures in order to meet the requirements and objectives outlined here. For this purpose read and fill in the confidential WebQ.
