Presentations
Students will give two formal presentations:
a five-minute presentation on the Web
project and a twenty-minute group presentation
on a film.
Electronic
Discussion
Students will use the class
discussion board to post responses to each film or reading. To
facilitate discussion, I will post questions to which I want you to respond.
Your posting should provide a 150- to 250-word response to a selected question;
you may also address your classmates’ ideas as you respond to the question.
The electronic discussion site allows us to extend class discussion and
to raise issues for in-class discussions. Your postings will be graded
on a credit/no credit basis.
To keep the discussion
board manageable, I have divided the class into two groups as follows:
-
Group One: Students with last names
A-L
-
Group Two: Students with last names
M-Z
Take-Home Midterm
Exam
In the fourth week of the term,
you will have twenty-four hours to complete a take-home midterm exam.
The exam will consist of essay questions that require you to analyze films
within their contexts by drawing upon class discussion and readings.
Web Project
Students will complete a
research
Web site on a class film or films. We will begin work on the
Web
project during the second half of the quarter. You will submit
several short assignments that will help you develop and compose the final
project: a proposal, an annotated bibliography, a design template
and site map, and a first draft. I will offer feedback on each of
these assignments, and I encourage you to meet with me often to discuss
your progress on the project.
Participation
and Attendance
Students should come prepared for
each class session, with assigned reading completed. I expect prompt,
regular attendance and active participation in discussions of readings
and films. To encourage participation, I will call on students and
lead the class in frequent small-group discussion activities.
A number of our screenings will be
followed by workshops, and several of our meetings have been designated
lab sessions. These workshops and labs serve as a forum for you to
learn and demonstrate mastery of research and technical skills essential
to course learning goals. Therefore, attendance is required at all
workshops and labs; failure to attend will affect your participation
grade.
Policies
Late Policy
Late postings to the electronic
discussion board will not receive credit, nor will late take-home midterm
exams. Failure to do the Web project presentation
or to submit the short assignments connected with the Web
project will result in a .5 deduction for each missing assignment in
the final grade for the project. Late short assignments will be accepted
but will bring a .25 deduction in the final project grade. Late final
Web projects will receive a .3 grade deduction per day late, including
weekends and holidays.
Plagiarism
Policy
In your electronic
postings, presentations, and Web
project, you may draw upon the ideas and words of other writers.
However, you must make
clear to your audience that you are incorporating another’s work by
placing quotation marks around exact words and citing the author’s name
whenever you quote, summarize or paraphrase. Failure to credit sources
may result in a failing grade for the assignment, a failing grade for the
course, or expulsion from the university.
