  • An essential Internet research tool for American Studies scholars. The site has numerous links to sources on American literature, history, art, material culture (including film), gender studies, performing arts, religion and psychology, legal studies, race and ethnicity, economics, politics and social sciences.
  • Asian American Videography

  • From the UC Berkeley Media Resources Center, the site includes descriptions of films and videos by and about Asian Americans.
  • Black Cultural Studies

  • Sources on Black artists, filmmakers, cultural critics, and writers.
  • Black Film Center/Archive (Indiana University)

  • The creators of this site describe it as "a repository of films and related materials by and about African-Americans."  Use the page to conduct research on some of the films viewed for the course.
  • CLNet (Chicano/Latino Electronic Network)

  • Links to publications, Chicana Studies materials, library resources, and a diversity page with information on African American, Asian American, Chicano/Latino and Native American Studies.
  • The Color Purple

  • Angelica Guttierez, Tyiesha Miller, and Wendy Wang's site offers a critical analysis of The Color Purple that focuses on the characters of Celie, Shug and Sophia in terms of silencing, womanism, and resistance to conventional women's roles.  The analysis includes a discussion of technical elements such as mise-en-scene, lighting, sound and narrative structure.

  • Maria Covarrubias, Yazmin Flores, Judith Flores, and Claudia Martinez analyze the interracial relationship in the film Fools Rush In and offer an alternative scenario of their own that deconstructs the patterns of representation at work in the film.

  • Searchable index of over 125,000 films.  Contains links to biographies of directors, screenwriters, producers and actors; commentaries on individual films; and links to popular film reviews.

  • Use the query engine to search for Web reviews of particular films.
  • The Movies, Race and Ethnicity

  • Videography of films and videos with images of African American, Asian American, Chicanos/Latinos, and Native Americans.  Films surveyed include mainstream pictures as well as those produced by people of color.  The site also contains bibliographies on various racial and ethnic groups in film and television and full-text articles on ethnicity, race and representation.

  • National Asian-American Telecommunications Association

  • Guide to Asian-American produced films and videos that have appeared on public television.  The NAATA also funds Asian-American filmmakers.
  • National Latino Communications Center

  • A "media arts production resource center that supports, produces and syndicates Latino programming for public television."  The site contains an archive of films and videos produced with the NLCC's support.
  • Native American Film and Video Resources on the Internet

  • Links to information on films and videos by and about Native Americans, full-text articles on the cinematic representation of Native Americans, and information on videos available for sale or rental.
  • UCLA Arts Library Selected Internet Sources on Film

  • Links to sites on directors, actors, studios, unions, electronic journals, film research, festivals, movie reviews, searchable databases, and internet guides to film.
  • A Voice Untold: An Analysis of Saving Private Ryan

  • Authored by Kendall Clark, Anulkah Thomas, and Mercedes Zavala, students in a previous Race in US Cinema course, this page examines the exclusion of soldiers of color from Saving Private Ryan, a film that claims to present an accurate portrait of World War II.

  • A short guide on how to to read the text and context of a film.  The page has excellent questions to guide students in their analysis of narrative, staging, cinematography, editing and sound.

  • Material on technical aspects of filmmaking, discussions of genres and the relationship between film and society.  Each section on formal aspects of film contains definitions of common terms.  Also contains books reviews, an essay gallery of works on film and film theory, and links to material on Hollywood film studios, critical theory and writing.
