Criteria for Peer Critique of Essay #2

Students in English 197C decided that we should work toward the following goals in revising Essay #2.  An effective final draft should have the following elements or perform the following functions:

Thesis

  • typically an argument
Coherence
  • elements in the paper support the thesis
  • elements in each paragraph support the argument made in that paragraph
Topic Sentences
  • state the main claim of each paragraph and advance the thesis
Support/Evidence
  • description of scene or element from film
  • summary, paraphrase, or quotation from film
Analysis vs. Plot Summary
  • paper analyzes specifics from the film instead of recounting the plot
Discussion of Specific Technical Aspects of the Films

Comparison/Contrast Between the Films

Vivid language and precise language

  • picturing the scene in words, using precise language to do so
Effective Transitions

Grammar and Mechanics

  • do not impede the reader's understanding of the argument
