1.) Quizzes:
1/23 Quiz on Approaches to New Media Criticism (3-4 short answer questions) 1/30 Quiz on Internet Detective (multiple choice)
2.) Reading/Reflection papers:
The primary text for this course is The Language of New Media (LNM), by Lev Manovich. It is a fascinating but dense book that will require close reading and thoughtful reflection. In order to facilitate richer engagement with this meaty book, you will write a reflection on the readings from NML assigned for five (5) of the seven (7) class sessions between January 30 and February 27. You choose which 5 of the 7 readings you will write on; each reading/reflection paper will be due at the beginning of the respective class sessions for which the reading has been assigned. These papers (no more than one page; 2-3 paragraphs, typed, double-spaced, 12pt. font) should include a brief (3-4 sentence) summary of the main themes of the reading assigned for the class session, and any insights, ideas or questions that the reading provoked for you.
3.) Oral Presentation: (10 pts) In-class presentation of your final project, 5-7 minutes. Detailed guidelines will be provided.
4.) Final Project: (30 pts) Critique of a web site or other new media object. The object of your critique must be approved in advance. You may present your critique in the form of a 12-15 page paper, or on the Web. You may work singly or in pairs on the final project. If working in a pair, you will do a comparative analysis of two web sites or two versions of the same site across time. Detailed guidelines will be provided. Due by noon on Monday, March 18.
Grading: Proposals and outlines of assignments 3 & 4 will be required; consultation with the professor and the submission of rough drafts for assignments 3 & 4 for feedback prior to their due dates are encouraged. Revision and re-submission of the reflection papers and final project will not be permitted. Requests for re-grading of an assignment must be presented in writing, with a clear rationale. Except for reflection papers, which will not be accepted after their corresponding due dates, the grade for late assignments will be lowered by 10% of possible points per day of delay. Medical documentation regarding ones absence on a quiz date is necessary in order to be eligible to take a make-up exam.
Final grade components:
1.) Quizzes (15 pts. each) 30 pts 2.) Reflection papers (6 pts. each) 30 pts 3.) Oral presentation 10 pts 4.) Final project 30 pts Total Points for course: 100
Note: To receive credit for this course all assignments and quizzes must be completed by the end of the quarter. Incompletes are granted only in extraordinary circumstances.
