Observed annual cycle of cloud fraction and SST in the eastern tropical Pacific. The clouds are the ISCCP C2 product and the SST is the Reynolds and Smith (1994) blended satellite product during 1984-93. Top: stratus cloud fraction; Middle: high cloud fraction; Bottom: SST. For the clouds, the contour interval is 20%, and shading indicates cloud fraction greater than 20%. Supplemental contours are given at 5 and 10%. For the SST, the contour interval is 1C, and shading levels increase every 2C.
