Figures for glider Mindanao Current experiment

  1. Paths of gliders in an idealized Mindanao Current
(These are estimated vertically-averaged speeds of the Mindanao Current,
based on the sections in Lukas et al, 1991, JGR 96(C4) 7089-7104):
    1. Gliders head due E and W:
      1. Very strong current (max 1.20 m/s)
      2. More realistic (?) current (max 0.6 m/s)
    2. Gliders try to stem the current:
      1. Strong current, 45° heading
      2. Weaker current, 45° heading
      3. Weaker current, 60° heading
      4. Weaker current, 60° heading, slower glider speed
