Exploring the nature of science in the era of the intelligent design movement
Biology 484, Spring 2006

Instructor: Ben Kerr

Location: 320 Hitchcock

Time: 4:00-5:50pm, Wednesdays

Course Description
In this seminar, we will use the intelligent design debate as a springboard to discuss the nature of scientific inquiry.  We will read philosophical, pedagogical, theological and scientific papers relating to this subject (we will also read some of the primary literature from ID proponents as well as reactions from critics).  In the process, we will get more familiar with the way that this socio-political/ideological movement has gained its momentum.  In this course we will explore the public-science interface regarding this debate (probing politics, law, religion and education).  We will discuss tools for productive conversation about (and teaching of) evolutionary biology.
