Autumn
2009
This
assignment will give you experience in exploring and using criteria by which to
evaluate resources for use by a given community or institution.
First
of all, you should review the various resources about
evaluation available via the course Web site. See what criteria are
mentioned or used, how reviews are written, and how they differ based on the intended
audience of the review and the resources in question.
Then,
based on your background and interest, you should select a subject area and an
audience or client. You may choose
either an individual person with a more specific need (not necessarily an
actual person, but you could; if you do, please consult with me in advance) or
a more general audience. For
example, you might choose a high school student deciding on a career in
photography, say, or a CEO looking for resources to protect her business from
cyberattack or a college senior looking for a topic for a senior thesis in LGBT
studies. You might also select
resources to help middle school students
You
should then identify 3 criteria you think would be most important and useful in evaluating
those resources for that audience.
Then, you should identify the 3 resources you think would be potentially useful
for that subject area and audience.
The
product you should produce is an evaluation of those resources, designed for
your audience or client, using those criteria. It should be tailored for your audience in scope, style,
length, etc., but bear in mind it also must be
thorough and professional (and that I am your real, ultimate audience). You must incorporate the criteria in
your discussion, telling why you chose each one over others, and then use those
to assess the resources.
You
should submit:
·
a description of the audience or clientele (this
can be a brief statement, not part of the narrative)
·
citations, URLs, etc., for the
resources in question (also need not be part of the narrative)
·
your evaluation to your client or audience
Your
submissions will be evaluated on the criteria you identify and use, the
decisions you make, appropriateness for audience, and the overall quality of
your presentation.
You
are to work on this assignment on your own. Please be sure that each submission has the last 4
digits of your student number and not your name in the upper right hand
corner of the first page.
This
assignment is due in class on November 19. NOTE date change
