Hall of Fame, Hall of Shame

An assignment for 552 students only

Requirements

Prepare a presentation of ten minutes in length (plus or minus one minute), accompanied by slides created using powerpoint, keynote, or other presentation software.

The presentation should be your analysis of two websites or software applications. One of them, which we will call "Hall of Fame", is a website or application that is excellent. Its excellence should be in following the principles of good design that we have studied in this course. The other one, which we will call "Hall of Shame", is a website or application that is very poor. Its poorness is as a result of violating many of the principles of good design.

You will be graded based on the extent to which you relate the specific characteristics of the websites or applications that you choose to the specific design principles that we have studied in class. These design principles are related to handling complexity, satisfying human needs, sensitivity to cognitive limitations, and usability of interfaces. Your presentation will primarily use graphical images, which will likely include several screenshots, and should follow the guidelines discussed earlier in the course for good presentations.

You are free to include a video or screencast as part of your presentation.

Orienting

As indicated in the schedule, there will be a short meeting at the end of one of the class sessions of all 552 students. The purpose is to discuss this assignment and to answer any questions. Nothing is due this class session, but all 552 students are required to attend in order to ensure that they understand the requirements and expectations for this assignment.

Run-through

On the date indicated in the schedule, we will take an entire class session for all graduate students to deliver their presentation to one another and the instructor. We will use this opportunity to make recommendations to one another for improvement. This session will be for graduate students only.

Presentation

On this date, each graduate student will give their final presentation, this time to the entire class. We will take approximately 5 minutes for discussion for each presentation.
