Research Bioengineer
Purpose of position:
The purpose of the position is to conduct prosthetics engineering research to improve the quality of life of persons with artificial limbs. The research bioengineer assist with the enhancement and use of measurement instrumentation and systems. He/she will work closely with bioengineers, clinicians, and other engineers in these efforts.
This position will start in late spring 2007. We are currently accepting applications.
General duties:
· Conduct studies (using existing instrumentation) to assess normal subject skin thermal response to controlled pressures and shear stresses
· Help with the mechanical design and fabrication of a system to apply controlled pressures to amputee residual limbs and use this system to assess thermal response to known pressures
· Calibrate and maintain instruments to measure interface pressures and shear stresses, residual limb shape, and socket shape on lower-limb amputee residual limbs
· Help collect, process, and analyze data from the interface stress, residual limb shape, and socket shape measurement instruments
Requirements:
· A Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
· Must have strong attention to detail
· Strong organizational skills
· Familiarity with LabView and Matlab software
· Good oral communication skills, ability to work independently or as a team member
· Good basic engineering and logical thinking aptitude
· Must be positive, energetic, and motivated to work in bioengineering research
Desirable:
· A Master of Science degree in Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
· More than one year post-graduate working experience
· Good machining skills
