Lectures

The most efficient way to summarize, illustrate, compare, contrast and synthesize many aspects of algal biology remains the lecture format. Typically there will be one or more lectures each day (depending on the field trip, lab work other project schedule). Students will participate and gain lecture experience by developing short presentations in lecture format on selected topics.

Lecture topics will include:

• Form and Function of Phytoplankton and Seaweeds
• Reproduction and Life Histories
• Identification of seaweed and phytoplankton
• Systematics and Phylogeny
• Ecological Role of Algae in Coastal and Oceanic Ecosystems
• Habitats of Phytoplankton and Seaweeds
• Plant-Animal Interactions
• Distribution and Biogeography Seaweed
• Invaders and Harmful Algal Blooms
• Guest lecturers often visit FHL and participate in course activities by sharing their expertise on selected topics
