Shell Mound Archaeological Project - Kentucky

Started as Stein's dissertation research, the geoarchaeology of the shell mounds of the Green River, Kentucky is again being examined. In collaboration with Darcy Morey, George Crothers, and Patty Jo Watson, we have returned to the river to determine if the location of various mounds correlates with bedrock-controlled shallows in the river. An historic map was discovered by Crothers and Morey that indicate the pre-dam location of the shallows and calling into question some conclusions made in Stein's dissertation . Indian Knoll shell mound has been added to the study in collaboration with Jim Fenton and Nick Herrmann. Much of this work is presented in, Archaeology of the Middle Green River Region, Kentucky, which was published in 2005.
