The French new music group "Ensemble Intercontemporain" was in Seattle, for two days of residency at the School of Music, University of Washington, April 20-21, 1999. Created in 1976 by Michel Guy, then France's Minister of Culture, fulfilling the vision of Pierre Boulez for an ensemble devoted entirely to performing the music of our time, the Ensemble Intercontemporain quickly established itself as one of the leading groups for new music in the world. The repertoire of the group over the past 20 years includes more than 1400 works, including 260 world premieres and 115 works which it specifically commissioned. In addition to new compositions the Ensemble performs the 20th-century classics that have influenced the music of today. The Ensemble Intercontemporain gives between 70 and 85 concerts annually, about half in Paris, and the remainder throughout France and abroad. Their passage in Seattle is part of a tour of several American Universities, including UCLA, Stanford, Berkeley, MIT and SUNY at Buffalo. Under the direction of their Music Director David Robertson, they gave at the University of Washington a Presentation of György Ligeti's Piano Concerto (April 20), Workshops at the Cornish School of the Arts and a the Shoreline Community College, and a Concert on the UW campus, in Meany Hall (April 21). The concert included works by Igor Stravinsky, Iannis Xenakis, György Ligeti, and UW Composition Professor Joël-François Durand. Masterclasses at the UW School of Music also took place during their residency. |
