Homework Assignments for Week 6

Week 6

For Monday, Oct. 27:

1.  Pronunciation Project 2: Review your notes on your first pronunciation project, and then make a recording of Gumperz 15, aiming for maximum accuracy.

2.  Then, translate the following sentences (based on Gumperz 15) into Hindi:

The woman sitting (literally: seated) over there sells cosmetics (hint: beauty products).

The Hindi spoken in Delhi is not as pure (शुद्ध) as that spoken in Banaras (hint: use जितनी/उतनी).

A ha, that’s why Banaras has been a pilgrimage site since ancient times!

No, I think people come here to do puja and offer flowers in temples.

Usually shoes are made of leather, but these clogs have been made of wood.

In America, most sandals are imported [ie ordered from outside].  What is the reason for this?

No special reason.  In America, all the goods are imported.

For Wednesday, Oct. 29:

Prepare for Group Work next Wednesday (Nov. 5), by writing 1-2 pages about some or all of the following topics (all taking place in the past, mostly perfect):

When did you start learning Hindi?  Why?  Where did you learn it?  How did you like it (how did it seem to you) then?

Have you gone to India?  Where have you gone in the US, or the world?  What did you do there?

What did you do on your last birthday/vacation/New Year’s (or some other day)?  What was the best thing you did for a birthday/special occasion etc?

Tell some funny anecdote or story (some ideas: playing a joke on someone, making an embarrassing mistake) to amuse us.

Review Gumperz 15.

For Friday, Oct. 31:

NO CLASS ON FRIDAY.
