Week 3

For Monday, Oct. 6: Gumperz 13 (last session)

1.  Review Gumperz 13 and then translate the following sentences into Hindi:

What is that beautiful building called?  It’s called Suzzalo Library.

Next year 520 [the highway] will be repaired.

Since last year there’s been a lack of money, so people had to sell their houses.

When foreigners go to see the Taj Mahal, they often have covers put on their shoes.

Don’t worry, in this hotel all arrangements have been made for your comfort.

These marks on the floor [use relative-corelative] have been made for playing basketball.

If you get the chance [hint: formulaic phrase!], please come to my place tomorrow.

2.  Write down some ideas for situational conversations you would like to have in class (the vegetable store; at the doctor’s; taxi ride, etc).

Also: Make appointment with me to go over your pronunciation project.

For Wednesday, Oct. 8: Variations on Gumperz 13

1.  Listen to a conversation on our course website about things to see and do in Delhi (http://faculty.washington.edu/jdubrow, listening comprehension page).  You can listen several times and try to understand as much as possible.  Then…

2.  Prepare your own brief presentation about what one should see and do in a certain city—you can use Fatehpur Sikri, Delhi, Seattle, or some other city.  Try to discuss a few places (such as the Space Needle) in some detail.

For Friday, Oct. 10:  Situational Conversation 1

1.  Memorize the vocabulary given for the situational conversation and prepare some sentences to use in class.

2.  Write 1 page on any topic you like.
