A professional marketer for over 20 years, I have:
- worked and delivered business results in telecommunications, the restaurant industry and on “madison avenue”,
- taught marketing at some of the top business schools in the US ,
- developed new products and advertising programs for Fortune 500 companies,
- written business plans and gotten funding for and launched new venture startups,
- been invited to speak at numerous conferences and executive programs,
- received recognition from the USA Today, AirTouch Cellular, USWest Inc.
Currently, I am a Lecturer, School of Business, University of Washington teaching classes in Marketing High Tech Products, Marketing New Products and Innovation, and Service Marketing and Operations. And I received an award from the Dean as an Outstanding Teacher “In recognition of his excellence in teaching” in the TM MBA program.
My experience includes three years as VP, Marketing and Business Development, TeleSym, Inc. While there, I:
- prepared the business plan that focused TeleSym on the wireless IP telephony business. Result $14 M in funding.
- was a key member of 3 person management team that launched company at DEMO2001,
- led PR and marketing programs to achieve industry recognition (e.g. Wired Magazine, “25 Companies to Watch”)
- built TeleSym’s business relationships with 3COM, Intermec and Intel,
- wrote and managed the product plan which generated numerous industry awards including Best in Show and Product of the Year awards from Telephony Magazine,
- managed TeleSym’s marketing programs with several Fortune 1000 companies that led to first $150,000 in TeleSym revenue.
I participated in and contributed to the growth of the wireless telephone business for 10 years. Starting at USWEST Cellular as the VP, Marketing and Customer Services. Launched USWEST's Cellular Digital Messaging Service; led a Quality Improvement Team that won the USA Today Quality Cup. When USWEST Cellular was acquired by AirTouch, launched AirTouch Digital Cellular service in the Northwest, sponsored development of the first corporate extranet site with Microsoft; and launched AirTouch Net Access the first wireless web browser service in the NW. Responsible for over $400M annual revenue as the GM, NW Area for AirTouch Cellular (dba Verizon Wireless).
Before arriving in Seattle, I worked as Sr. VP and head of the Marketing Services Group at NW Ayer, a multinational advertising agency in New York City. Was responsible for developing strategic and tactical marketing direction for Ayer clients, including AT&T, Avon, DeBeers, JC Penny, Kraft, and Gillette. While at Ayer, I managed the $75M AT&T Long Distance advertising account. In 1987 joined USWEST as VP Market Strategy Development.
Before starting my executive business career, I was Assistant Professor of Marketing at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Have published articles in the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science and Management Science. Been an invited speaker at the Executive Educational Programs at Northwestern University, the Graduate School of Business at the University of Washington and many industry forums. Was a founding member of the Journal of Marketing Science. Earned an M.A. in Economics and a B.B.A. from the University of Oklahoma. Have a Ph.D. in Management Science and Marketing from Purdue University
