| 1920 | SILKSCREEN | This technique was common in China centuries ago; after the First World War it was imported, via Japan, into the United States, where it was improved and subsequently it became known in Europe. A fabric screen with a fairly open weave, possibly nylon, is stretched over a wooden frame, and the parts which are not to beprinted through are covered with a varnish. The paper to be printed is placed under the frame and receives the colour when it is drawn across the screen (pochoir, Sieb, setaccio) with a rubber blade called a squeegee. The white areas in the print correspond to those parts of the fabric protected by the varnish. |
