RUF submission to the Moscow open challenge - selected as one of five winners
SUMMARY
RUF DualMode Transport System offers a unique new solution to most of the key problems facing the transport sector today: Climate, congestion, accidents, travel time, disruption of city life etc.
The key invention is a new drive system which makes the system far more efficient than known systems.
The system has been developed in Denmark and tested on a small test track as reported on CNN in 2001 (www.ruf.dk/cnn.doc). RUF has also been shown on Russian State Television.
A contract regarding the rights to build RUF systems in India has been signed and the system has created strong interest in Calcutta.
Many experts globally have recommended the RUF system. See: www.ruf.dk/recommendations.pdf
Extensive descriptions of RUF can be found at:

The inventor of RUF: MSc EE Palle R Jensen has made many inventions and has received many prizes internationally for his inventions.

PROBLEM
Transport is always from point A to point B
For a Public Transport System to handle this, a combination of train and bus is needed.
Mismatch between time tables is a huge problem and for that reason people prefer the car.
The car is a very popular solution, but it is not sustainable and takes up far too much space in the cities. It is being strangled in its own success.
SOLUTION
RUF DualMode Transport System solves the problems because it combines the train and the bus in one vehicle.
The bus-mode is used to pick up passengers locally.
The train mode is used to move the passengers very fast and safe the long distance.
The traincar becomes a bus when the vehicle leaves the monorail at 30 km/h
The same principle can be applied for electric cars of a new type.
These cars can drive automatically and very safe at 150 km/h on the monorail.
They can then leave the monorail at 30 km/h and continue manually guided on the normal road system. The small batteries are recharged from the monorail power lines, so the driver don't have to be afraid about range limitations.

IMPACT ON ECONOMY
The implementation of a RUF DualMode Transport System will be very beneficial to the economy.
A study was made for a RUF network in Copenhagen financed by EU in the CyberCars project.
See: www.ruf.dk/rufcba.doc and www.ruf.dk/rufcba.xls
The reason for this result is that it is a very inexpensive system to implement. No leveling. The rail modules are placed on top of masts which are vibrated into the ground until the height is just right.
There is no standing in the RUF system, so the dimensions of the vehicles are quite small.
There is no driver while running on the monorail. It is automated like the Copenhagen Metro. Only for the street part, a chauffeur is needed.
When used as a system for electric cars, the system has the advantage that it can avoid congestion since all vehicles on the monorail are system controlled.
Furthermore, and very important, the time spent on the monorail can be used for work, unlike the car driver on a highway which has to be concentrated on the traffic all the time.
IMPACT ON CULTURE
Traffic in cities destroy the city life because it occupies the space where people ought to be able to walk and enjoy life.
Underground systems are way too expensive and are boring to use.
An elevated transport system gives the user a positive experience since the view from 4 m height is excellent.
The noise from traffic will be much lowered.
IMPACT ON ECOLOGY
RUF DualMode System is all electric, so it uses the power much more efficient than gasoline driven cars and busses.
The special drive system (US Pat no. 6,523,480) makes it possible to lower the rolling resistance with a factor of at least 4. The reason is that the vehicle is carried by smooth wheels rolling on a smooth surface (low noise). When the vehicle has to climb a hill, the drive wheels are pressed against the vertical surface of the top of the monorail and only as long as it is needed.
An elevated system like RUF has no barriere effect. Animals don't get run over and the city is not divided as we know it with rail lines and highways.
Most important: A RUF system can deliver better mobility and at the same time eliminate CO2 emissions totally running from windmill power.
IMPACT ON POLITICS
RUF systems will create jobs. Many developing countries need infrastructure. The first implementation can be the starting point of a major new industry.
A global RUF standard will be defined. It will make cross country travel and goods transport very efficient.
The network of monorails can be used as a container for important data fiberoptical lines and for power exchange lines to compensate for fluctuating power production from renewable sources.
In short: RUF can help solve many of the very difficult challenges facing any political system today.
