teaching

I am inspired by the philosophy and practice of radical pedagogy. Radical pedagogy is about facilitating dynamic forms of open-ended knowledge seeking and production. My teaching aims to incorporate the ethics of justice, liberation and progressive social change with learning, thinking, reading, speaking, writing and doing. I am committed to active student participation and learning in my courses through a variety of in-class activities, discussion and through writing assignments. Deepening the ability to define and address questions and problems, interpret and analyze diverse forms of knowledge, and enhancing communication and self-expression--written and oral skills—in producing knowledge are important goals in my undergraduate courses. I focus upon mentoring at the graduate level by assisting each individual in finding her or his unique voice and developing individual intellectual abilities and academic and theoretical interests and articulating a position as an intellectual, scholar and teacher.

During the academic year, I offer the following courses:

Geog 271: Geography of Food and Eating

Geog 371: World Hunger and Resource Development

Geog 425: Qualitative Methods in Human Geography

Geog 532: Rural Development Graduate Seminar
