Study Sheet for Final Quiz

Review Sheet for Final Quiz: BLS 345, Global Labor Markets

The final quiz will consist of one essay question and one problem question.

One of the following questions will be on the essay segment of the exam (think of writing at least 3 blue book pages):

  1. Using specific examples from your readings, discuss the extent to which poor labor conditions are a result of globalization.
  2. Using analyses and concepts from class and readings, discuss what you see as the most promising directions for improving global labor conditions?
  3. Does investment in human capital offer good solutions for workers in the US to labor dislocations resulting from global trade? For workers abroad? Address the proposals discussed in Globaphobia. Are they applicable to less developed countries as well? You may, but need not, wish to consider the film Stealing Home, on reserve in the library.
  4. Explain briefly how U.S. immigration policy has changed over time. What are the core conflicts that affect immigration policy.
  5. Based upon your readings, would you conclude that immigration policy has or has not benefited the US?
  6. In comparison to other countries, how has immigration affected the questions of U.S. identity and citizenship?

To prepare for the problems sections consider the following:

  1. Investment analysis (present value, discount factors, future value)
  2. Human capital (general and specific human capital models)
  3. Investment incentives
  4. The effect of immigration on wages and employment using supply and demand analysis.
  5. You can expect that a subsection of the problem question will ask you to apply the core concepts to some problem(s) raised in class.
