In Alfred Hitchcocks’s North by Northwest, Cary Grant travels from New York to Chicago on the train 20th Century Limited. A New York Central time table of that era lists the trip as being 960.7 miles for the route through Cleveland and Toledo.
In this case we can tell from the number 960.7 that the uncertainty is at most a few 1/10 ths of a mile. The number would not have been quoted to the 1/10ths place if the uncertainty were a few miles.
If there had been some track revisions that made the route uncertain by a mile or two, the distance might be quoted as 961 miles.
