Homework #4 BES 301 Autumn 2005
Reading Assignment:
- For Monday, October 24, read the
paper by Shortle et al (E-reserve) and Valiela, ch6, 126-146.
These are background for Dr. Rosenberg’s class that day.
- For Wednesday, October 26, Mr. Rob
Estes, Science Reference Librarian, will be with us to discuss finding
articles in the scientific literature and evaluating these sources. Class will be in the library that
day. We will meet in room LB1-222 for Wednesday 10/26 from 8:45-10:50.
Before class on 10/26, please read the article I handed out from The
Chronicle of Higher Ed.
It provides background on the subject of relative “impact” or importance
of publication in certain journals.
Also, please look at the url below before
class on 10/26, as it presents a set of resources that Rob Estes will be
discussing:
http://www.uwb.edu/library/guides/bes301Jackels.html (also linked to Library Resources
page on course web site)
- Review
your notes, class notes, and readings to prepare for the exam on 10/31.
Time permitting, there will be a short
recap session and review guide at the end of class on 10/26.
Take notes in your
class journal. Be prepared to
participate or take the lead in a class discussion on aspects of these
readings.
Research Assignment:
Complete the step #1 of the Literature Review Exercise
(topic selection) and hand it in electronically before class on Oct 24.. Instructions are in the handout. You are expected to confer with your peer
group about your progress (using the Peer Review tool), but each student is to
individually carry out the assignment.
That is, you should not work on it as a group, but are free to confer
with each other about what you are doing and the progress you are making. In fact, you are expected to consult, via the
Peer Review tool. The E-submit site is
open now, and you may submit this assignment early to get earlier approval,
feedback from me, and start your research.
However, you should not submit the assignment to me before you have
posted it for review by your group.
Written Assignment
- Hand
