Reading Assignment:

• For Monday, October 17, read and study Valiela, ch5, pp 99-125.
• For Wednesday, October 19, read and study Valiela, ch7, pp 147-69.

Take notes in your class journal.  Be prepared to participate or take the lead in a class discussion on aspects of these readings.

 

Research Assignment:

Complete the observations/questions/hypotheses assignment and hand it in electronically before class on Oct 17..  You may confer with your partner about your progress, but each student is to individually carry out the assignment.  That is, you should not work on it as a team, but are free to confer with each other about what you are doing and the progress you are making.  Note that you are to bring three extra copies of this assignment to class on Oct 17 for discussion with your work group.

 

Written Assignment

• Hand in the observations/questions/hypotheses phase of the research assignment before class on Oct 17.  Follow the detailed instructions in the assignment handout.
• Prepare a one-page essay addressing the following topic.  It is to be handed in electronically before class on Oct 19.  This assignment is identified as “Renouf Paper” at the E-submit site.
  
  List three scientific question posed by Renouf in her essay (p. 51 of Hatton), try to formulate a hypothesis for each one,  and describe the experiment(s) done to try to answer them.
