HivnetWide.dat -- DOCUMENTATION

These data contain a single row of variables for each participant -- or the
"Wide" format for repeated outcomes.  Data are taken from the HIVNET 
Vaccine Preparedness Study.  The variables are (in column order):

  ID        =  participant ID
  RISKGROUP =  1=MSM, 2=Male IDU, 3=WAHR, 4=WAHR+IDU  (see below)
  EDUCATION =  educational attainment: 1= <high school, 2= high school,
                                        3= some college, 4= college,
                                        5= some post, 6= grad/professional
  AGE       =  participant age (years)
  COHORT    =  1 if new cohort, 0 if "rollover" from previous study
  ICgroup   =  1 if part of the informed consent intervention; 0 if control
  WILL0     =  1 if participant was willing to enroll in a phaseIII trial,
               and 0 otherwise.  measured at baseline.
  KNOW0     =  knowledge score at baseline (ranges from -10 to +10)
  Q4SAFE0   =  1 if "is safe" item correct at baseline, 0 if incorrect
  Q4SAFE6   =  1 if "is safe" item correct at month 6, 0 if incorrect
  Q4SAFE12  =  1 if "is safe" item correct at month 12, 0 if incorrect
  NURSE0    =  1 if "nurse decides" item correct at baseline, 0 if incorrect
  NURSE6    =  1 if "nurse decides" item correct at month 6, 0 if incorrect
  NURSE12   =  1 if "nurse decides" item correct at month 12, 0 if incorrect


Note:

(1) Risk Groups defined:
"MSM" means gay men, or Men who have Sex with Men.
"Male IDU" means male subjects at risk for HIV due to injection drug use.
"WAHR"  means women at high risk for HIV due to heterosexual risk.
"WAHR+IDU"  means women at high risk for HIV due to heterosexual risk and
   due to injection due use.

(2) The item Q4SAFE, or the "is safe" item, refers to the question that
asked whether "the HIV vaccine is known to be safe if used in a phase III 
study" is true or false.  (It's false).

(3) The item NURSE, or the "nurse decides" item, refers to the question that
asked whether "the study nurse decides whether a participant receives the
active vaccine or the placebo" is true or false.  (It's false).
