Reading - available on Electronic Reserve

Wilson, T.D. (1999). Models in information behavior research. Journal of Documentation, Vol. 55, No. 3, pp. 249-270.

Tasks

1. Develop your own model of information behavior

2. Critique one of the models of information behavior appearing in Wilson’s article. (Wilson, Dervin, Ellis, Kuhlthau, Ingwersen, Saracevic)

Read Wilson’s article. You will be introduced to numerous models of information behavior. Use Wilson’s article as a point of reference for developing your own model of information behavior. Use Wilson’s definition of information behavior “..those activities a person may engage in when identifying his or her own needs for information, searching for such information in any way, and using or transferring information.” Be prepared to present and defend your model in class.

Use the article as a launching pad to critically examine one of the models that Wilson introduces. You will need to locate and read the original work. Try to identify the extent to which the model has been cited, accepted or adopted by others in the field and beyond. Be prepared to talk at length about the model in class. At the heart of your presentation there should be some commentary on the extent to which the model provides “a complete, or reasonably complete representation” of the reality that it is seeking to model.
