There is weekly homework, due at the beginning of Thursday's quiz section (first homework due 10/4/07). The homework assignments are listed on the main course webpage www.math.washington.edu/~m124/ We will use the assignments exactly as listed unless explicitly mentioned in class. For each homework set, two questions will be selected at random for grading (unfortunately we do not have enough graders to grade all the homework questions). The homework makes up 10% of your course grade. Quizzes
There is a quiz every Thursday in the quiz section. The quizzes make up 10% of your course grade. Worksheets
There are worksheets to be completed each Tuesday in the quiz section. The worksheets are in the Course Pack (available at the UW bookstore) and are also on the main course website www.math.washington.edu/~m124/ . You should bring a copy of the worksheet to the quiz section. The worksheets make up 5% of your course grade. Exams
There are two midterm exams and one final exam. The midterm exams will be held in the Tuesday quiz sections on Oct 23 and Nov 20 (weeks 5 and 9). The final exam will be Saturday Dec 8, 1:30-4:20PM, in ARC147. You should bring your student ID and a photo ID to each exam. You may bring one 8.5x11 handwritten sheet of notes (writing allowed on both sides). You may use a scientific (but *not* graphing) calculator. The exams count for 75% of your course grade -- 20% for each midterm and 35% for the final. Calculator policy
Graphing calculators are *not* allowed on the exams and quizzes. You may use a scientific calculator with trigonometric functions, logarithms and exponential functions. Resources
1. The main course website (includes a full syllabus, homework assignments, worksheets, and past exams and quizzes): www.math.washington.edu/~m124 The Math 124 course pack is a hard copy of most of the materials on the website, available at the UW bookstore. 2. The math study center: www.math.washington.edu/msc/ 3. CLUE: www.depts.washington.edu/clue 4. My office hours (see above). Textbook
The course text is Calculus, Early transcendentals, 5th ed., by Stewart. There is a 25% discount available at the UW bookstore. It is important to read the text book as well as attending the lectures -- there is not enough time in class to cover all the material. The sections we will cover are listed in the syllabus on the main course website www.math.washington.edu/~m124 If you are sure you will not take MATH126 you can use Single variable calculus, Early transcendentals, 5th ed., by Stewart -- it is slightly cheaper but does not cover multivariable calculus. |
