Maria Pereverzeva :
Centering bias in heterochromatic brightness matching
Abstract
A bias is a systematic dependence
of psychophysical judgment on parameters extraneous to the nature of a stimulus,
i.e. stimulus range, response range, decision criteria etc. Biases can pose
a serious problem in psychophysical judgments: when we think we are measuring
an observer’s response to the stimuli, we may be, in fact, looking at
the response already contaminated by effects of the stimulus range. I will describe
our work on centering bias in heterochromatic brightness matching. I will show
concrete examples of centering bias, and discuss possible bias mechanisms..
