Annotated Bibliography of Double Wind Quintet Music
Created and maintained by Catherine Gerhart
HomeABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZMore...
This is a bibliography of music for double wind quintet (also called decets, dectets, decimettes, or tentets) and related works.
The first section consists of music for the most common interpretation of double wind quintet, namely 2 flutes (or piccolo(s)),
2 oboes (or English horn(s)), 2 clarinets (B flat or A), 2 bassoons, and 2 French horns. Click on the alphabet at the top of the page
to move through the list which is arranged alphabetically by the composers last name. Following that section are five
smaller lists of related titles. For instance, the standard dwq plus a solo instrument; the basic dwq plus an additional one or
two instruments (often extra horns or a trumpet or two), etc. Links to these related sections can be found at the end of this
introduction. There are many double wind quintets plus string bass. Sometimes the extra bass is essential and sometimes it can
be, with little detrimental effect, left out. When I determine that an okay performance is possible without it, I put the citation
in both the main list and the supplemental one. Same for when the other instruments are optional, they will go in both places.
Each citation varies somewhat because of the information that I've been able to find, however, what I've tried to
include in each one is:
hot links to a biography of the composer or I write one myself if there isn't one on the Web,
a complete bibliographic citation including title, place of publication, publisher name, date of publication, and series;
length of the piece,
names of movements,
description of the piece including the difficulty level if it can be determined,
information about the commissioning of the piece, who premiered it and when, and any recordings that are available,
and, links to distributors where people can obtain the piece.
Site created and maintained by Cathy Gerhart.
Currently this is a work-in-progress and is being edited as often as possible, sometimes daily! I would love to hear from anyone
using the site concerning what they found helpful or not, and what information they might like to have that isn't there. Special
thanks to Paul Schlossman who has kindly shared with me information about recordings of some of the pieces below that he has in
his extensive collection of wind music recordings.
before an entry indicates that I own a copy of the piece, or, know someone that does and can answer questions about the piece if they aren't
answered in the bibliography.
Site first appeared on the WWW June 21, 2005, last edited July 1, 2008. At last count, lists about 356 for regular dwq and
about 126 pieces for related instrumentation.
One of the most successful songwriters of the early part of the era of the modern Brazilian
song. His song "Tico Tico no Fubá" ("Tico-tico Bird in the Cornmeal") was popularized in the US as "Tico Tico".
On a list of dwq music of the group Orion Winds. I still need to follow up with them to see who arranged and other such details.
Includes extra parts for E flat clarinet substituting for the 2nd oboe and an optional string bass part.
This is an arrangement of the 3rd piece of Albéniz' piano work 'Suite Española', opus 47. It was first played at a woodwind course run by the bassoonist Kerry Camden. A fun piece to play and listen to of moderate difficulty.
A neo-classical theme with six variations displaying all the colors, beautiful solos, gusto and lyricism of this medium.
Duration: 11 min., 30 sec.
Playable by a reasonably good group with a conductor. Playing without a conductor would require better players since there is
some tricky meter and tempo changes.
"Composed originally for a centenary concert of the Morley College London, 1984. First performed: June 1st 1984 Morley
College Wind Group, conductor, Lawrence Leonard"--Page [68] in composers hand.
Duration: 28 min.
Manuscript resides in London in the British Music Information
Centre. In that copy pasted to the inside cover is a typewritten note listing the movements and giving the following information:
Prelude and choral (using the ensemble as a whole)
Concertino (Five variations in the shape of three arias and two ritornelli, featuring solo instruments or groups- oboe solo
two horns- flute soli- cor anglais and bassoons- clarinet and bass clarinet, soli.
Antiphony (Finale in which the ensemble is divided antiphonally into two wind quintets.
"Note: Vista was composed for an amateur group of performers. The wind group or 'serenade' was typically a baroque instrument
of entertainment, and it suggested the possibility of an essay in a classical style, which the composer was anxious to deploy as
a reaction against a number of years of composition mainly in somewhat complex serial methods of the post-Webern era. The
nostalgia for a work using classical methods of constructive symmetry was compared by the composer, in the programme-note of the first
performance, to an architect who had been working for years in steel and concrete looking through the trees at a vista of Kenwood House on
Hampstead Heath, and wishing for an opportunity of building something, even on a small scale in that style."
This piece has a jazzy feel, being influenced by the Gerry Mulligan song Soft shoe.
Commissioned by Landesmusikakademie Rheinland-Pfalz and premiered in 1997 by a group of young
musicians under the direction of Ulrich Freund (bassoonist with the Staatsphilharmonie Ludwigshafen).
Not too difficult a piece, playable by young advanced musicians or good amateurs, not just for professionals.
Duration: ca. 20 min.
Available for rental only from Peermusic.
I didn't find a nice biography to link to so here's some information from some program notes I've found.

The variations numbered 2,4,6,8,10,11,13,15,18, and 20 are for standard dwq with no doublings, the other
variations include two trumpets and a bass trombone.

Composed in 1979 for the Southampton Concert Orchestra Wind Ensemble, this work was chosen in 1981
to be performed in Rome at the International Festival of Women in Music.
This edition was prepared and typeset in 2004 by Laurence Perkins with the help of the composer incorporating revisions
in orchestration and editing that had been made in 1999.
Duration: 15 min.
The piece is in five movements, Prelude, March, Cantilena, Scherzo, and Postlude.
Subtitle on 1st page of music: A virtuosity for double wind quintet. "For the Rondel Ensemble"--At head of caption title.
Lance Baker is the son of Ruth Gipps and clarinetist Robert Baker. He plays horn and composes. Tickerage Press was Lance's
mother's own publishing company. This piece was originally written as a companion piece for Gipps' Wind sinfonietta which
also has an optional tam tam part which Lance played as first horn of the Rondel Ensemble. Interestingly, when this was performed the two horns sat in
the middle with a wind quintet arrangement on either side.
Doubles on piccolo (flute 2), English horn (replaces the 2nd oboe), alto sax (only when clarinet in A isn't available to the clarinet
1), bass clarinet (clarinet 2), and the horn 2 plays the optional tam tam.
While this piece is partly variations on this folk song, it is also partly new material. A fairly difficult piece only
playable by professionals and very good amateurs.
Duration: about 15 min.
This piece is also listed in the
British Music Information Centre directory with the title "Double wind quintet on Blow the wind southerly".
Premiered in about 1995 by the Rondel Ensemble, a group of professional musicians of which the composer played 1st horn.
In addition to the score of this work the
British Music Information Centre also lists a recording of this work by the Rondel Ensemble.
Taught at Julliard and the American University (Washington, D.C.)
Bardwell, William, 1915-1994.
Antiphony.
W. Bardwell, 1968.
The British Music Information Centre has a recording of this
piece which I listened to on 22 October 2007. I'm not absolutely certain because the cataloging is a bit strange, but I think
the recording is of Music Projects London at St. John Smith Square, there's not a date but there is clapping on the tape so it was
a live concert. It begins very stridently and dissonantly in the first movement but in the second
and third movements the piece takes a more consonant and melodic direction. The third movement is playful with the various
instruments playing off each other like a game of tag.
Duration: 14 min.
Manuscript score and parts are held at the BBC Library. I have not had a chance to follow up and verify this.
Beaumont, Adrian, 1937-
Concerto for double wind quintet / Adrian Beaumont.
Isle of Lewis, Scotland : Vanderbeek and Imrie, Ltd. (15 Marvig, Lochs, Isle of Lewis, Scotland PA86 9QP), 1967.
Written in 1967 and premiered by the Bristol University Orchestra wind section. It was subsequently substantially revised in
1998 for the Wind Ensemble of the Wells Cathedral School but was never performed in it's revised form.
This piece is neo-baroque in spirit and the two quick movements use ritornello form, with the ritornellos being
played by all ten instruments and solo sections being scored for a variety of smaller groupings. The Andante is
largely fugal. The general idiom of the piece is expanded tonality, with all twelve notes used freely with no distinction
between major and minor but always with a tonal center.
Not terribly difficult, playable by a good amateur group.

Since there isn't a good biography to link to on the Web, here's a short bio: Adrian is from Yorkshire, England.
He studied music at the University College in Cardiff, graduated in 1958, master's in 1961, and doctorate in 1972. He is
an oboist as well as conductor and composer. He conducted the Bristol Opera and founded the Bristol Bach Choir which
he conducted until 1978. He was on the staff of the Music Department of Bristol University from 1961 to 2002 and is a frequent
conductor of its' Symphony Orchestra and Choral Society as well as the New Music Ensemble. Married to Janet Price (soprano) since 1963, he's written many
pieces for her, as well as pieces for other genres with the exception of opera. Retired since 2002, he spends time gardening and
fell-walking when he isn't composing.
This is a very easy arrangement of two minuets. I haven't timed them but they are very short,
maybe two minutes each. Each minuet is the standard 8 bar phrase repeated, there are four phrases.
This piece is recorded on a CD entitled Autumnal / music by G. Bellucci. It is performed on the
recording by the Insieme a fiati 'Rossini' di Pesaro, conducted by the composer. Recorded at Recanati, Aula Magna, on June 24, 1979.

Although I know this exists through contact with Kaleidoscope Wind, we've been unable to find out if a copy is available. I've
been informed by someone that was there, that it was written and performed at Morley College quite a few years ago. He's checking
into the fate of the wind music that used to be there, but in the meantime if anyone finds some information about this, please
contact me at: gerhart@u.washington.edu.
Reflections on a 16th century tune / R.R. Bennett.
Chester/Novello, 1999 (distributed by Musicroom.com)
This piece is based on the sixteenth century French popular song "A l'ombre d'un buissonet" first printed in "La Couronne
et Fleur" (1556). Originally written for a large string orchestra, commissioned for the 1999 International Youth String Orchestra
at the ESTA Conference in Portsmouth, it was transcribed by the composer for a double wind quintet, with second flute and oboe
doubling piccolo and cor Anglais, second clarinet playing bass clarinet, second bassoon on double bassoon.
Doodling through history : for ten winds / Stacey Berk.
Berks, 1997.
This piece is a romp through the musical periods (starting with cavemen), using "Yankee Doodle Dandy" as the theme.
One performer is the main narrator, but each performer introduces a different musical period. Some singing and much "hamming it
up" is required! Some examples are "Yankee Doodle" blended with "Ode to Joy", "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik", "In the Mood", and "The Rite of Spring".
It was written for and performed by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West Chamber Players. They performed it on many concerts with much success.
Duration: 18-19 min.

Portraits of the odyssey : for ten winds / Stacey Berk.
Berk, 1998.
A difficult piece but fun to listen to because of it's programmatic nature, this piece has the instrumentalists doubling
on percussion instruments. Flute 1 doubles on piccolo and alto flute, flute 2 plays the triangle, oboe 1 plays the woodblock with
soft mallets, oboe 2 doubles on English horn, clarinet 1 also plays bamboo wind chimes, clarinet 2 doubles on bass clarinet,
bassoon 1 plays finger cymbals and 2 plays an egg shaker, horn 1 an bell tree, and horn 2 a cymbal with stick.
Premiered by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West Chamber Players.
Duration: 16 min.

This lovely piece features the oboe. It is a one movement work that moves through a number of moods. The first 16 bars are
a slow introduction following by a lengthy middle section at a quick tempo. After this middle section in duple meter, it moves
to the ending in a triple meter which begins slowly but then speeds up for an exciting fast ending.
Written in October 1988 and dedicated to "amici dell'Ensemble di strumenti a fiato "Ch Gounod" dell Orchestra da Camera de Pesars".
I haven't timed the piece yet but it between 5 and 10 minutes long.

Written in 1898, this piece (op. 40) won the Paderewski Prize in 1901 for the best chamber music work by an American composer.
It was premiered by Georges Longy and his Woodwind Club in Boston on March 31, 1902. It's first European performance was in 1908 in Berlin.

Recorded by the North Texas Chamber Players on Klavier Wind Recordings, KCD-11071.
This piece was written in 1889 by the first American to become famous in Europe. Although he was born in
Massachusetts he lived and worked most of his life in Berlin. This piece is a beautiful example of late romantic writing for winds.

Estnische Tänze : op. 9 für 10 Blaser / Boris Blacher.

The Grove Music Online lists this work as being unpublished and destroyed (possibly during World War II), so alas, we may never
be able to play it unless somehow a copy survived.
Written in 1973, this piece is both stimulating and challenging in its rhythmic, melodic and expressive range.
It allows all instruments a chance to shine, either singly, in pairs, or in varying ensemble combinations.

While I haven't been able to find a copy of this for sale, there are 15 libraries in the United
States that hold it. I won't list them all here but they are spread around the country from California
to Maryland to Florida to Minnesota. I'm attempting to get a copy of this by Interlibrary Loan so
I hope I'll have more information about it soon.
There isn't a biography on the Web, but I found an obituary for Orrin that reads: Orrin James "Fess" Blattner of
Saratoga, 88, died Feb. 23 of heart failure. Blattner received his bachelor's and master's degrees from San José State
University. He bought his home in Saratoga in 1954, where he lived for 52 years. Proficient on more than 20 instruments,
Blattner taught music at Los Gatos High School from 1944 to 1977, and arranged many works. He was a member of the San
Jose Symphony, both as a trombone player and as the assistant conductor. He was also president of the San Jose Musicians
Union Local 153 from 1959 to 1987. He was a bandleader all throughout his adult life, including the Gem City Jazz Band
in the Bay Area and the Colorado River Jazz Patrol in Arizona.
Fiddler on the roof / Jerry Bock ; adapted from an arrangement by Bill Holcombe by Dominic Sewell.
Originally a musical, this piece was subsequently arranged for single wind quintet by Bill Holcombe.
Later Sewell took that arrangement and adapted it for double wind quintet. The horn part from the wind quintet
was missing so Sewell had to reconstruct it to make his adaptation.
Commissioned by New Harmonie in Sussex, England and premiered at the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington on June 30, 2002.

I found in this listed in a print source as published by Southern Music but I haven't been able to verify that yet.
There doesn't seem to be a good biography of Yohanan on the Web but I did find that he was born in Breslau,
and emigrated to Israel in 1936 where he lived the rest of his life primarily being a music critic for the Jerusalem Post.
Recorded by the Vientos de la Orquesta Sinfonica de Jerusalen, directed by Gary Bertini. I found this listed
on the program of a radio station that didn't list the record company. If you know of this recording, please let me know.
I couldn't find a distributor for this but two libraries hold it, the Curtis Institute of Music, in Pennsylvania, and,
the University of Western Ontario. I did find an address for IMP which might help locate this piece, it is: Israeli Music Publications, Ltd.

Bois is a Dutch composer primarily self taught. He practiced law as a profession until 1994. The Grove Music Online
article about him says his works show a rare talent for musical comedy as well as a habit of boldly exploring the possibilities of avant-garde matter in a joyful manner.
Bolcer, John.
Arranger, librarian and horn player in Chinook Winds. He's arranged the following for the group:
Both flutes double on piccolo although the arranger indicates that the second flute part could, if absolutely necessary be played on flute.
Slow and fast sections and a brisk middle section which uses 2 piccolos. There is a brief extract to listen to on the publisher Web sited linked above.
This arrangment has an optional contrabassoon part. Also the 2nd flute doubles piccolo.
Variations and a fugue on a theme by Handel was originally written for piano and is based on the Handel
tune Harmonious blacksmith which is originally the Aria con variazioni from the 2nd collection of the
Suites for harpsichord. Tony has chosen to arrange those variations that suit wind instruments the
best without departing too much from the original, so the piece is somewhat shorter than the original.
Pan suite : für 10 Blasinstrumente und Kontrabass / von Max Brauer.
Virginia Water, England : One Dee Press, [19--?]

I don't see a biography of Brauer on the Web so here's what I could find about him. He was born in Mannheim on May 9, 1855 and
died in Karlsruhe on December 2, 1918. He was primarily a conductor and had studied with Vincenz Lachner and a variety of people
at Cologne University. In 1880 he conducted the Cäcilienvereins at Kaiserslautern and in 1888 Hofkirche at Karlsruhe wher he
founded a Bach Society in 1905. He also wrote operas and string music.
I don't see this piece listed in the Breitkopf catalog but the One Dee Press edition can be had by phoning Roy Penny at:

Commissioned by Bedfordshire Orchestra Society, and performed by the Bedford Sinfonia in January 1999.
Lucid alternates between gentle, predominantly chordal music, and a wilder, sometimes harsh and more linear style.
Sometimes the ten wind players function as two separate wind quintets, one group echoing the other's phrases or
adding colour to a particular moment in a paragraph. At other times, they function as a more homogenous group.
Throughout the piece, all players are of equal importance, the second player having material that is as demanding
as the first.
Lucid is a purely abstract piece of music, inspired by nothing but the clear, colourful sounds of wind instruments, and the forms and textures of music itself. Its title, with its connotations of light and clarity, is simply the first of the four words at the top of the score which direct the performers as to the style of the first section - 'Lucid, gentle, but lively'.
Some different carols : for wind decet / traditional, arranged by Jonathan Burton.
2007.
This piece was written for Jonathan's quintet, who every Christmas gets together with another quintet for a
decet session with mulled wine and mince pies. They play the Raff Sinfonietta which they love and a few other things, finishing
up playing rather terrible quintet arrangements of Christmas carols, two to a part. The players always wanted to know '
Why can't we have some different carols?' so at Christmas 2007 Jonathan turned up with this piece. The first flautist was
having a 60th birthday, so the last movement is a surprise for him (written in such a way that he can't see what's coming). When
Jonathan mentioned this last bit to me and should he delete the birthday bit, I said he should leave it
in since, after all, it is a birthday that we celebrate at Christmas so it makes sense to have it there.
Duration: ca. 11 minutes.
Christmas carols arranged in eight movements:
1 - The Mediaeval One (Gaudete)
2 - The Basque one (Ator, ator) [erroneously listed as `Atoz, atoz'-my mistake]
3 - The French one (Il est né, le divin enfant)
4 - The Old English one (The Coventry Carol)
5 - The One About The Holly (from Cornwall)
6 - The Other French one (Nous voici dans la ville)
7 - The Other Mediaeval One (The Boar's Head Carol)
8 - The Very Traditional One (Dies natalis tibi felicitatis)
Found this listed in: Wind ensemble literature, 2nd ed., rev. 1975 / by Reynolds ... [et al.] Haven't found any other mention
of it however. Other than indicating that it's for standard dwq this is all that's listed. This publication is somewhat suspect
in my view since just below this entry the two Arthur Bird pieces, Suite and Serenade, are listed as by William Byrd. I'll keep looking
for verification that an arrangement of a Byrd Pavane exists or existed.
Variations on the tune Walsingham / William Byrd ; arranged by Maurice Hodges.
Leeds : Woodwind Plus, c1993.
This was a popular tune during the Renaissance which Byrd arranged and notated for keyboard. There's a nice
MIDI recording available online if you'd like to get an idea what the tune is. Click here

Written in 1901 and first performed by the Societe de Musique on March 9, 1901, this piece was most likely inspired by the World's Fair which was held in Paris in 1900.
This piece has three movements, Scharki (Chant d'amour), Nihavend, Iskia samaisi.
If you're interested in the manuscript of this piece, it is held at the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Pictures from life at a music center including scales and tuning. Suite written to celebrate the removal of the Kent Music
School Tonbridge Centre to more commodious premises in 1975. A piece not to be taken too seriously, it depicts, somewhat wryly,
and with special references to wind teaching, the history of the original music centre from its foundation in 1962.
1. Les gammes: Scales are the foundation of wind playing; they progress from tentative examples in simple keys to arpeggios
and chromatics and a triumphantly secure conclusion.
L'accord: Intonation-always a problem. This slow movement is preoccupied (not entirely successfully) with finding a true oboe A.
Les eaux: In 1968 the Centre became disastrously engulfed in the river Medway after a rainfall of 8.5 inches in 16 hours. The
Scherzo depicts the drama of this.
Le déménagement: The Finale represents the triumphal procession to the splendid new premises, not without nostalgic
backward glances.
Mozart more(or less)s : bicentenary tribute / Graham Coatman.
1991.
This one movement piece was written for the Mozart bicentenary. It uses a number of Mozart

Originally written in 1980 as an historical music play for voice and piano. Later parts of the musical were
rewritten for double wind quintet. It is very tonal with the music descriptive of the moods in the play. The tunes

Later, in 2002 part of the suite was played by New Harmonie in Horsham, Sussex.
Duration, ca. 30 min.
Roddy studied music at Manchester University, taught in schools in London and Kent, and has a special
interest in the Kodaly method. He plays the horn and piano and writes compositions for string orchestra,
choral works, a string quartet and many works for wind ensembles and chamber groups. He lives in north London and
teaches Junior School. He plays badminton, rambles on the weekends, assistant leader in the Scouts and organist on

A Romanian by birth, this piece was written in Paris in 1906 (although the preface in the Compusic edition says 1904) when
Enescu was 25 years old. In Paris at the time flutist Taffanel and others gave regular concerts of wind music, of which this was
surely a valuable addition. Three movement piece with a romantic character with folk elements intertwined.
One oboe doubles on English horn in this piece.

Members of the Romanian National Orchestra on Olympia OCD 445.
Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Lawrence Foster conducting on Claves CD 50-8803.

I'm not sure which edition Dorn or Muramatsu distributes but they both have one of them:

Fanfare and three masquerades : for horn solo and wind nonet / Malcolm Forsyth.
Ricordi, 1979.
Toronto : E.C. Kerby, 1983.
1 score (28 p.) + 10 parts ; 28 cm.
This piece was funded by the Canada Council and written at the request of John Ellis, hornist in the Bläser-Ensemble
Mainz. Premiered by Ellis and the Bläser-Ensemble Mainz at the music festival in Weilburg Germany.
Written to be performed outside, it begins with with a bright, opening in the style of a fanfare (Hear ye! Achtung!) that
would get the attention of the audience who might be otherwise distracted by the beautiful weather, friends and neighbors, or picnic
food. The three masquerades that follow each use the idiom of either Brahms, Miaskovsky and Schumann to create a tonal but
interesting piece. The parody of each composer contain actual quotations as well as elaborations and disguises.

This is a tonal piece that would be easy enough for students and amateurs. It was premiered on August 6, 1991 by the
National Youth Wind Orchestra soloists at Winchester Cathedral.

For flute, flute 2/piccolo, oboe, English horn, 2 clarinets in A, 2 bassoons, 2 horns (one of which plays the tamtam (the
tam tam part is written in both horn parts).
Written in 1989 for the Rondel Ensemble. The first horn player in this group was Lance Baker, Ruth's son, who told me,
when we corresponded about this piece and the companion piece he wrote, that he played the tam tam part on the first performance.
The American Composers Alliance only has a facsimile of the manuscript score for this piece.
There doesn't seem to be a published copy of the score and parts.
Commissioned by a Consortium of USA High Schools. Premiered in Minneapolis, Minn. in November 2004.
Duration: 15 min.
This piece was originally conceived during an exercise Gorb set for his students,
which was to write a variation for double wind quintet on the Bach keyboard prelude in C, BVW 939.
He subsequently took this same prelude and used it as a basis for a kind of Baroque suite for the same combination.
The six movements of the work follow the model of the Baroque French suite.
The first movement is an Overture featuring an angular introduction followed by a fugato in 5/4 time,
followed by a stately Allemande led by flute and bassoon, a lively Courante in fast triple time,
a mournful Sarabande featuring solo oboe and horn and a Gavotte that also pays homage to Neo-classicism.
The piece ends with a Gigue, which makes much use of canonic writing. This piece has a certain degree of
flexibility in the instrumentation, the two horn parts can be played on saxophones,
the second bassoon can be played on a bass clarinet and the oboe 2 part on a clarinet.
Tambourin / by Gossec ; arranged for double wind quintet by Michael Axtell.
England : Magic Flute Publications, c1995.
1 score (5 p.) + 10 parts.
One of the flutes in this arrangement plays only piccolo.
Originally written for orchestra, this piece is a moderate to easy (depending on how fast you
end up taking it!) arrangement that makes an excellent encore piece. I has a charming, lighthearted melody that fits winds perfectly.

This piece is well known as the Alfred Hitchcock signature tune.
For 2 flutes, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons and 2 horns.
This is an atonal, serial piece of music in three movements. It is technically difficult and very
difficult rhythmically. It definitely needs a conductor. The group it was written for at an Adult
Education college had a reputation for excellence in music (director of Music there included Gustav
Holst and Michael Tippett as well as Graubart), so, though the wind group was nominally an amateur
one, it was a pretty expert amateur one and included some students at music colleges.
Dedicated to Lawrence Leonard and the Morley Wind Group, it was premiere
