Annotated Bibliography of Double Wind Quintet Music
Created and maintained by Catherine Gerhart
HomeABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZMore...
This is a bibliography of music for double wind quintet (also called decet, dectet, decimette, dezett, or tentet) and related works.
The first section consists of music for the most common interpretation of double wind quintet, namely 2 flutes (or piccolo(s)),
2 oboes (or English horn(s)), 2 clarinets (B flat or A), 2 bassoons, and 2 French horns. Click on the alphabet at the top of the page
to move through the list which is arranged alphabetically by the composers last name. Following that section are five
smaller lists of related titles. For instance, the standard dwq plus a solo instrument; the basic dwq plus an additional one or
two instruments (often extra horns or a trumpet or two), etc. Links to these related sections can be found at the end of this
introduction. There are many double wind quintets plus string bass. Sometimes the extra bass is essential and sometimes it can
be, with little detrimental effect, left out. When I determine that an okay performance is possible without it, I put the citation
in both the main list and the supplemental one. Same for when the other instruments are optional, they will go in both places.
Each citation varies somewhat because of the information that I've been able to find, however, what I've tried to
include in each one is:
hot links to a biography of the composer or I write one myself if there isn't one on the Web,
a complete bibliographic citation including title, place of publication, publisher name, date of publication, and series;
length of the piece,
names of movements,
description of the piece including the difficulty level if it can be determined,
information about the commissioning of the piece, who premiered it and when, and any recordings that are available,
and, links to distributors where people can obtain the piece.
Site created and maintained by Cate Gerhart.
Currently this is a work-in-progress and is being edited as often as possible, sometimes daily! I would love to hear from anyone
using the site concerning what they found helpful or not, and what information they might like to have that isn't there. Special
thanks to Paul Schlossman who has kindly shared with me information about recordings of some of the pieces below that he has in
his extensive collection of wind music recordings.
before an entry indicates that I own a copy of the piece, or, know someone that does and can answer questions about the piece if they aren't
answered in the bibliography.
Site first appeared on the WWW June 21, 2005, last edited Decenber 10, 2015. At last count, lists about 360 for regular dwq and
about 127 pieces for related instrumentation.
One of the most successful songwriters of the early part of the era of the modern Brazilian
song. His song "Tico Tico no Fub" ("Tico-tico Bird in the Cornmeal") was popularized in the US as "Tico Tico".
On a list of dwq music of the group Orion Winds. I still need to follow up with them to see who arranged and other such details.
Commissioned by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for a concert featuring its wind players at Carnegie Recital Hall,
New York, on December 16th, 1984.
Composer's facsimile ed.
Duration: 10 min.
Recorded live at Concordia College by the Sylvan Winds in May 1997 and released on Composers Recordings (CRI) in 1998. Available on Amazon.com.
Also available from New World Records.
Includes extra parts for E flat clarinet substituting for the 2nd oboe and an optional string bass part.
This is an arrangement of the 3rd piece of Albéniz' piano work 'Suite Española', opus 47. It was first
played at a woodwind course run by the bassoonist Kerry Camden. A fun piece to play and listen to of moderate difficulty.
A neo-classical theme with six variations displaying all the colors, beautiful solos, gusto and lyricism of this medium.
Duration: 11 min., 30 sec.
Playable by a reasonably good group with a conductor. Playing without a conductor would require better players since there is
some tricky meter and tempo changes.
"Composed originally for a centenary concert of the Morley College London, 1984. First performed: June 1st 1984 Morley
College Wind Group, conductor, Lawrence Leonard"--Page [68] in composers hand.
Duration: 28 min.
Manuscript resides in London in the British Music Information
Centre. In that copy pasted to the inside cover is a typewritten note listing the movements and giving the following information:
Prelude and choral (using the ensemble as a whole)
Concertino (Five variations in the shape of three arias and two ritornelli, featuring solo instruments or groups- oboe solo
two horns- flute soli- cor anglais and bassoons- clarinet and bass clarinet, soli.
Antiphony (Finale in which the ensemble is divided antiphonally into two wind quintets.
"Note: Vista was composed for an amateur group of performers. The wind group or 'serenade' was typically a baroque instrument
of entertainment, and it suggested the possibility of an essay in a classical style, which the composer was anxious to deploy as
a reaction against a number of years of composition mainly in somewhat complex serial methods of the post-Webern era. The
nostalgia for a work using classical methods of constructive symmetry was compared by the composer, in the programme-note of the first
performance, to an architect who had been working for years in steel and concrete looking through the trees at a vista of Kenwood House on
Hampstead Heath, and wishing for an opportunity of building something, even on a small scale in that style."
This piece has a jazzy feel, being influenced by the Gerry Mulligan song Soft shoe.
Commissioned by Landesmusikakademie Rheinland-Pfalz and premiered in 1997 by a group of young
musicians under the direction of Ulrich Freund (bassoonist with the Staatsphilharmonie Ludwigshafen).
Not too difficult a piece, playable by young advanced musicians or good amateurs, not just for professionals.
I didn't find a nice biography to link to so here's some information from some program notes I've found.

Composed in 1979 for the Southampton Concert Orchestra Wind Ensemble, this work was chosen in 1981
to be performed in Rome at the International Festival of Women in Music.
This edition was prepared and typeset in 2004 by Laurence Perkins with the help of the composer incorporating revisions
in orchestration and editing that had been made in 1999.
Duration: 15 min.
The piece is in five movements, Prelude, March, Cantilena, Scherzo, and Postlude.
Subtitle on 1st page of music: A virtuosity for double wind quintet. "For the Rondel Ensemble"--At head of caption title.
Lance Baker is the son of Ruth Gipps and clarinetist Robert Baker. He plays horn and composes. Tickerage Press was Lance's
mother's own publishing company. This piece was originally written as a companion piece for Gipps' Wind sinfonietta which
also has an optional tam tam part which Lance played as first horn of the Rondel Ensemble. Interestingly, when this was performed the two horns sat in
the middle with a wind quintet arrangement on either side.
Doubles on piccolo (flute 2), English horn (replaces the 2nd oboe), alto sax (only when clarinet in A isn't available to the clarinet
1), bass clarinet (clarinet 2), and the horn 2 plays the optional tam tam.
While this piece is partly variations on this folk song, it is also partly new material. A fairly difficult piece only
playable by professionals and very good amateurs.
Duration: about 15 min.
This piece is also listed in the
British Music Information Centre directory with the title "Double wind quintet on Blow the wind southerly".
Premiered in about 1995 by the Rondel Ensemble, a group of professional musicians of which the composer played 1st horn.
In addition to the score of this work the
British Music Information Centre also lists a recording of this work by the Rondel Ensemble.
Taught at Julliard and the American University (Washington, D.C.)
Bardwell, William, 1915-1994.
Antiphony.
W. Bardwell, 1968.
The British Music Information Centre has a recording of this
piece which I listened to on 22 October 2007. I'm not absolutely certain because the cataloging is a bit strange, but I think
the recording is of Music Projects London at St. John Smith Square, there's not a date but there is clapping on the tape so it was
a live concert. It begins very stridently and dissonantly in the first movement but in the second
and third movements the piece takes a more consonant and melodic direction. The third movement is playful with the various
instruments playing off each other like a game of tag.
Duration: 14 min.
Manuscript score and parts are held at the BBC Library. I have not had a chance to follow up and verify this.
Beaumont, Adrian, 1937-
Concerto for double wind quintet / Adrian Beaumont.
Isle of Lewis, Scotland : Vanderbeek and Imrie, Ltd. (15 Marvig, Lochs, Isle of Lewis, Scotland PA86 9QP), 1967.
Written in 1967 and premiered by the Bristol University Orchestra wind section. It was subsequently substantially revised in
1998 for the Wind Ensemble of the Wells Cathedral School but was never performed in it's revised form.
This piece is neo-baroque in spirit and the two quick movements use ritornello form, with the ritornellos being
played by all ten instruments and solo sections being scored for a variety of smaller groupings. The Andante is
largely fugal. The general idiom of the piece is expanded tonality, with all twelve notes used freely with no distinction
between major and minor but always with a tonal center.
Not terribly difficult, playable by a good amateur group.

Since there isn't a good biography to link to on the Web, here's a short bio: Adrian is from Yorkshire, England.
He studied music at the University College in Cardiff, graduated in 1958, master's in 1961, and doctorate in 1972. He is
an oboist as well as conductor and composer. He conducted the Bristol Opera and founded the Bristol Bach Choir which
he conducted until 1978. He was on the staff of the Music Department of Bristol University from 1961 to 2002 and is a frequent
conductor of its' Symphony Orchestra and Choral Society as well as the New Music Ensemble. Married to Janet Price (soprano) since 1963, he's written many
pieces for her, as well as pieces for other genres with the exception of opera. Retired since 2002, he spends time gardening and
fell-walking when he isn't composing.
This is a very easy arrangement of two minuets. I haven't timed them but they are very short,
maybe two minutes each. Each minuet is the standard 8 bar phrase repeated, there are four phrases.
This piece is recorded on a CD entitled Autumnal / music by G. Bellucci. It is performed on the
recording by the Insieme a fiati 'Rossini' di Pesaro, conducted by the composer. Recorded at Recanati, Aula Magna, on June 24, 1979.
The CD is available from Dr. Giovanni Grano Via B. Cairoli, 27 85028 Rionero in V. (PZ - Italy) Email: kisgra@tin.it Tel. +39-0972-723514 Mob. +39(0)349-5204173.
Although I know this exists through contact with Kaleidoscope Wind, we've been unable to find out if a copy is available. I've
been informed by someone that was there, that it was written and performed at Morley College quite a few years ago. He's checking
into the fate of the wind music that used to be there, but in the meantime if anyone finds some information about this, please
contact me at: gerhart@u.washington.edu.
Reflections on a sixteenth century tune : for double wind quintet / Richard Rodney Bennett.
Chester/Novello, 1999
This piece is based on the sixteenth century French popular song "A l'ombre d'un buissonet" first printed in "La Couronne
et Fleur" (1556). Originally written for a large string orchestra, commissioned for the 1999 International Youth String Orchestra
at the ESTA Conference in Portsmouth, it was transcribed by the composer for a double wind quintet, with second flute and oboe
doubling piccolo and cor Anglais, second clarinet playing bass clarinet, second bassoon on double bassoon.
This piece is a romp through the musical periods (starting with cavemen), using "Yankee Doodle Dandy" as the theme.
One performer is the main narrator, but each performer introduces a different musical period. Some singing and much "hamming it
up" is required! Some examples are "Yankee Doodle" blended with "Ode to Joy", "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik", "In the Mood", and "The Rite of Spring".
It was written in 1997 for and performed by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West Chamber Players. They performed it on many concerts
with much success.
Portraits of the odyssey : for ten winds / Stacey Berk.
Berk, 1998.
A difficult piece but fun to listen to because of it's programmatic nature, this piece has the instrumentalists doubling
on percussion instruments. Flute 1 doubles on piccolo and alto flute, flute 2 plays the triangle, oboe 1 plays the woodblock with
soft mallets, oboe 2 doubles on English horn, clarinet 1 also plays bamboo wind chimes, clarinet 2 doubles on bass clarinet,
bassoon 1 plays finger cymbals and 2 plays an egg shaker, horn 1 an bell tree, and horn 2 a cymbal with stick.
Premiered by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West Chamber Players.

This lovely piece features the oboe. It is a one movement work that moves through a number of moods. The first 16 bars are
a slow introduction following by a lengthy middle section at a quick tempo. After this middle section in duple meter, it moves
to the ending in a triple meter which begins slowly but then speeds up for an exciting fast ending.
Written in October 1988 and dedicated to "amici dell'Ensemble di strumenti a fiato "Ch Gounod" dell Orchestra da Camera de Pesars".
I haven't timed the piece yet but it between 5 and 10 minutes long.

This piece was written in 1889 by the first American to become famous in Europe. Although he was born in
Massachusetts he lived and worked most of his life in Berlin. This piece is a beautiful example of late romantic writing for winds.

While I haven't been able to find a copy of this for sale, there are 15 libraries in the United
States that hold it. I won't list them all here but they are spread around the country from California
to Maryland to Florida to Minnesota. I was successful in borrowing a copy and have made a copy for private use until I find a copy for sale.
There isn't a biography on the Web, but I found an obituary for Orrin that reads: Orrin James "Fess" Blattner of
Saratoga, 88, died Feb. 23 of heart failure. Blattner received his bachelor's and master's degrees from San Jos State
University. He bought his home in Saratoga in 1954, where he lived for 52 years. Proficient on more than 20 instruments,
Blattner taught music at Los Gatos High School from 1944 to 1977, and arranged many works. He was a member of the San
Jose Symphony, both as a trombone player and as the assistant conductor. He was also president of the San Jose Musicians
Union Local 153 from 1959 to 1987. He was a bandleader all throughout his adult life, including the Gem City Jazz Band
in the Bay Area and the Colorado River Jazz Patrol in Arizona.

and emigrated to Israel in 1936 where he lived the rest of his life primarily being a music critic for the Jerusalem Post.
Recorded by the Vientos de la Orquesta Sinfonica de Jerusalen, directed by Gary Bertini. I found this listed

Bois is a Dutch composer primarily self taught. He practiced law as a profession until 1994. The Grove Music Online
article about him says his works show a rare talent for musical comedy as well as a habit of boldly exploring the possibilities of avant-garde matter in a joyful manner.
Bolcer, John.
Arranger, librarian, and horn player in Chinook Winds. He's arranged the following for the group:
Both flutes double on piccolo although the arranger indicates that the second flute part could, if absolutely necessary be played on flute.
Slow and fast sections and a brisk middle section which uses 2 piccolos. There is a brief extract to listen to on the publisher Web sited linked above.
This arrangment has an optional contrabassoon part. Also the 2nd flute doubles piccolo.
Variations and a fugue on a theme by Handel was originally written for piano and is based on the Handel
tune Harmonious blacksmith which is originally the Aria con variazioni from the 2nd collection of the
Suites for harpsichord. Tony has chosen to arrange those variations that suit wind instruments the
best without departing too much from the original, so the piece is somewhat shorter than the original.

Pan suite : für 10 Blasinstrumente und Kontrabass / von Max Brauer.

"A satisfactory performance by wind decet can be achieved without Kontrabass if C/bass cues in parts are played"--T.p. of One Dee Press edition.

live concert given by Chinook Winds in June 2008 at the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle, Wash.
I don't see a biography of Brauer on the Web so here's what I could find about him. He was born in Mannheim on May 9, 1855 and
died in Karlsruhe on December 2, 1918. He was primarily a conductor and had studied with Vincenz Lachner and a variety of people
at Cologne University. In 1880 he conducted the Cäcilienvereins at Kaiserslautern and in 1888 Hofkirche at Karlsruhe wher he
founded a Bach Society in 1905. He also wrote operas and string music.
I don't see this piece listed in the Breitkopf catalog but the One Dee Press edition can be had by phoning Roy Penny at:

Commissioned by Bedfordshire Orchestra Society, and performed by the Bedford Sinfonia in January 1999.
Lucid alternates between gentle, predominantly chordal music, and a wilder, sometimes harsh and more linear style.
Sometimes the ten wind players function as two separate wind quintets, one group echoing the other's phrases or
adding colour to a particular moment in a paragraph. At other times, they function as a more homogenous group.
Throughout the piece, all players are of equal importance, the second player having material that is as demanding
as the first.
Lucid is a purely abstract piece of music, inspired by nothing but the clear, colourful sounds of wind instruments, and the forms and textures of music itself. Its title, with its connotations of light and clarity, is simply the first of the four words at the top of the score which direct the performers as to the style of the first section - 'Lucid, gentle, but lively'.
Some different carols : for wind decet / traditional, arranged by Jonathan Burton.
2007.
This piece was written for Jonathan's quintet, who every Christmas gets together with another quintet for a
decet session with mulled wine and mince pies. They play the Raff Sinfonietta which they love and a few other things, finishing
up playing rather terrible quintet arrangements of Christmas carols, two to a part. The players always wanted to know '
Why can't we have some different carols?' so at Christmas 2007 Jonathan turned up with this piece. The first flautist was
having a 60th birthday, so the last movement is a surprise for him (written in such a way that he can't see what's coming). When
Jonathan mentioned this last bit to me and should he delete the birthday bit, I said he should leave it
in since, after all, it is a birthday that we celebrate at Christmas so it makes sense to have it there.
Duration: ca. 11 minutes.
Christmas carols arranged in eight movements:
1 - The Mediaeval One (Gaudete)
2 - The Basque one (Ator, ator)[erroneously listed as `Atoz, atoz'-my mistake]
3 - The French one (Il est n, le divin enfant)
4 - The Old English one (The Coventry Carol)
5 - The One About The Holly (from Cornwall)
6 - The Other French one (Nous voici dans la ville)
7 - The Other Mediaeval One (The Boar's Head Carol)
8 - The Very Traditional One (Dies natalis tibi felicitatis)
Found this listed in: Wind ensemble literature, 2nd ed., rev. 1975 / by Reynolds ... [et al.] Haven't found any other mention
of it however. Other than indicating that it's for standard dwq this is all that's listed. This publication is somewhat suspect
in my view since just below this entry the two Arthur Bird pieces, Suite and Serenade, are listed as by William Byrd. I'll keep looking
for verification that an arrangement of a Byrd Pavane exists or existed.
Variations on the tune Walsingham / William Byrd ; arranged by Maurice Hodges.

Pictures from life at a music center including scales and tuning. Suite written to celebrate the removal of the Kent Music
School Tonbridge Centre to more commodious premises in 1975. A piece not to be taken too seriously, it depicts, somewhat wryly,
and with special references to wind teaching, the history of the original music centre from its foundation in 1962.
1. Les gammes: Scales are the foundation of wind playing; they progress from tentative examples in simple keys to arpeggios
and chromatics and a triumphantly secure conclusion.
L'accord: Intonation-always a problem. This slow movement is preoccupied (not entirely successfully) with finding a true oboe A.
Les eaux: In 1968 the Centre became disastrously engulfed in the river Medway after a rainfall of 8.5 inches in 16 hours. The
Scherzo depicts the drama of this.
Le déménagement: The Finale represents the triumphal procession to the splendid new premises, not without nostalgic
backward glances.
Mozart more(or less)s : bicentenary tribute / Graham Coatman.

The inn on the heath / by Roddy Elmer.
Originally written in 1980 as an historical music play for voice and piano. Later parts of the musical were
rewritten for double wind quintet. It is very tonal with the music descriptive of the moods in the play. The tunes
are singable by 11 year olds.
This piece was played by various groups at the summer school at Little Benslow Hills, Hitchin, Hertfordshire.
Later, in 2002 part of the suite was played by New Harmonie in Horsham, Sussex.
Duration, ca. 30 min.
Roddy studied music at Manchester University, taught in schools in London and Kent, and has a special
interest in the Kodaly method. He plays the horn and piano and writes compositions for string orchestra,
choral works, a string quartet and many works for wind ensembles and chamber groups. He lives in north London and
teaches Junior School. He plays badminton, rambles on the weekends, assistant leader in the Scouts and organist on
Sundays.

A Romanian by birth, this piece was written in Paris in 1906 (although the preface in the Compusic edition says 1904) when
Enescu was 25 years old. In Paris at the time flutist Taffanel and others gave regular concerts of wind music, of which this was
surely a valuable addition. Three movement piece with a romantic character with folk elements intertwined.
One oboe doubles on English horn in this piece.

Toronto : E.C. Kerby, 1983.
1 score (28 p.) + 10 parts ; 28 cm.
This piece was funded by the Canada Council and written at the request of John Ellis, hornist in the Bläser-Ensemble
Mainz. Premiered by Ellis and the Bläser-Ensemble Mainz at the music festival in Weilburg Germany.
Written to be performed outside, it begins with with a bright, opening in the style of a fanfare (Hear ye! Achtung!) that
would get the attention of the audience who might be otherwise distracted by the beautiful weather, friends and neighbors, or picnic
food. The three masquerades that follow each use the idiom of either Brahms, Miaskovsky and Schumann to create a tonal but
interesting piece. The parody of each composer contain actual quotations as well as elaborations and disguises.

Duration: 15 min.
This piece was originally conceived during an exercise Gorb set for his students,
which was to write a variation for double wind quintet on the Bach keyboard prelude in C, BVW 939.
He subsequently took this same prelude and used it as a basis for a kind of Baroque suite for the same combination.
The six movements of the work follow the model of the Baroque French suite.
The first movement is an Overture featuring an angular introduction followed by a fugato in 5/4 time,
followed by a stately Allemande led by flute and bassoon, a lively Courante in fast triple time,
a mournful Sarabande featuring solo oboe and horn and a Gavotte that also pays homage to Neo-classicism.
The piece ends with a Gigue, which makes much use of canonic writing. This piece has a certain degree of
flexibility in the instrumentation, the two horn parts can be played on saxophones,
the second bassoon can be played on a bass clarinet and the oboe 2 part on a clarinet.

Funeral march of a marionette / Gounod ; Peter Hill.
Hamburg : Peer Musikverlag, 1972.
Originally for piano and written in 1873 while Gounod was in London. Later in 1878 it was orchestrated.
This piece is well known as the Alfred Hitchcock signature tune.
For 2 flutes, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons and 2 horns.
This is an atonal, serial piece of music in three movements. It is technically difficult and very
difficult rhythmically. It definitely needs a conductor. The group it was written for at an Adult
Education college had a reputation for excellence in music (director of Music there included Gustav
Holst and Michael Tippett as well as Graubart), so, though the wind group was nominally an amateur
one, it was a pretty expert amateur one and included some students at music colleges.
Dedicated to Lawrence Leonard and the Morley Wind Group, it was premiered by them in 1985
at the October Gallery in London with the composer conducting.
Duration: 8 min.
I. Resoluto -- II. Molto allegro -- III. Lento
Michael Graubart was born in Vienna in 1930 and came to England as a refugee in 1938. He studied physics at Manchester University, but spent most of his time there composing and playing the flute. He graduated in 1952 and worked as a development engineer in electronics at EMI and then as a teacher and lecturer in maths and physics while studying composition with Mtys Seiber and flute with Geoffrey Gilbert, playing the flute and conducting various amateur and professional choirs and orchestras.
In 1966 he became a tutor and conductor at Morley College in London, and from 1969 to 1991 he was the Director of Music there. He also worked as Musical Director of Focus Opera Group and held the post of Adjunct Professor of Music at the London centre of Syracuse University (U.S.A.).
From 1991 to 1996 he was a Senior Lecturer in the School of Academic Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, taught in the Extra-Mural Department of Manchester University and conducted choirs in the North. He retired in 1996, though he still does some teaching, lecturing, composing and writing. For many years now he has studied philosophy at the Mary Ward Centre and at the City Literary Institute.
This piece isn't published yet but the composer will provide copies to interested parties.

c1978.
1 ms. score (53 p.)
This is the second of three concertinos written by Mr. Green, the other two are for different instruments.
It is an atonal piece with sections that are played through with no stops. It is rather difficult so players
will need to be college level ability or above.
This piece was written in 1978 for the winds of Morley College (Lawrence Leonard, conductor) in South London while Anthony was a student there
and was played only in rehearsals so has never had a public performance.

Written on the paper cover surrounding the score is 1964, but the date at the end looks like 1967 to me.
The original of this five movement piece (Praelude, Sarabande, Gavotte, Air, Rigaudon) was for
piano and later arranged for string orchestra. Written in 1884 is was commissioned to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth
of Ludwig Holberg, a writer born in the Grieg's birthplace, Bergen.
Cloister music : for double wind quintet, opus 8 / by Michael Gryspeerdt.
Bristol, UK : Blaise Publications, c1988.
1 score (31 p.) + 10 parts.
This piece was originally written for the wind players of the Gloucestershire Symphony Orchestra.
The first performance was in a serenade concert given in the Cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral on 24th June 1988.
The piece has four movements, Prelude, Caprice, Scherzo, and Rondo.
This piece is not terribly difficult but we found it much more satisfying to play it with a conductor because
of the tempo and time signature changes. A good amateur group could do it, or possible a very good high school group.
Although not currently being distributed, copies can be obtained by contacting Jeremy de Satge at the Music Makers.

A study in self-indulgent composition. Martin Mailman described it as opulent. It takes its name

The Only Blonde in the World / Pat Hanchet.
P. Hanchet,
"The Only Blonde in the World" is based on the painting by Pauline Boty (1938 - 1966) which is in the Liverpool Tate Gallery. It is
intended to be within the technical grasp of an amateur ensemble and is "flexibly" scored, with the aim of using as wide a variety of
clefs, keys, transpositions as possible within the group. Each player reads from the same stave, but imagines (or writes in ) a different
clef and key signature.
The picture shows a glamorous young Blonde stepping out as if to perform or meet her public. Her head and upper torso exude confidence
but her high-heel shod and spindly legs look wobbly and fragile.
The music starts on one instrument, soft and low, slinky and slow. As the each instrument enters, faster and higher than the previous one,
and in a different key, we sense her increasing unease until the music becomes frantic. Gradually the mood changes back from neurotic
to erotic as she presents herself in the appropriate manner.

Jouard, Paul, 1928-
Alec Andrew Templeton, Merry Christmas / Paul Jouard.
This piece was originally written to be submitted for a competition but wasn't finished in time.
It was performed, nonetheless, successfully in the 1960s.
Not an easy piece, it is bolder in style than other pieces by Kimpton.
Kimpton was born in Lincoln, England in 1927 and Geoffrey Kimpton was born in Lincoln, England, in 1927.
He became interested in music very young while listening to great singers and instrumentalists who performed
in the Cathedral and in churches and halls during and shortly after the war. For two years in his early teens he travelled to
Huddersfield for inspiring lessons from the great Yorkshire violin teacher Arthur Kaye. He also studied harmony and counterpoint
with Dr. Gordon Slater, the Lincoln cathedral organist. After National Service, he studied in London at the Guildhall School of
Music. Alfred Nieman, his composition teacher, had the Midas touch in transforming simple beginnings by his magical improvisations. There followed two
memorable years at the Vienna Academy, then back to London, and Birmingham. The music of Andrzej Panufnik, for two years conductor
of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, was a great inspiration and influence. In the early 1960s, Geoffrey and his family
settled in Manchester, and he has had a varied career as an orchestral player (in the BBC Northern Orchestra, now the BBC Philharmonic),
as a lecturer, violin teacher and composer. Over the years, various works for instrumental ensemble (some with voice) have been performed in Manchester, Birmingham, Cheltenham and St. David's Cathedral.
These include a Passacaglia and Fugue for string orchestra, a quartet, a string trio and several larger scale chamber works for strings and wind
instruments. He has written many songs for competitions and concerts organised by the English Poetry and Song
Society. Several of these have been awarded prizes, and have been performed in Bath, Bristol and Manchester.
Various works of his have been recorded: 'The Upland Path' for solo violin, 'The Bridge of Hope' for violin and
piano (in three movements), 'Serenade' for clarinet and piano (in four movements), and three songs, as part of a
CD arranged by the North West Composers' Association. His latest recording is a double CD of twenty-eight of his own songs,
performed by five splendid artists. The poems he has set, on the theme of 'Love and Loss', contain a wonderful variety of human
experience: from rural contentment to hopeless longing and mental anguish, assuaged only by the muse of poetry; from witty
analogies to a simple and sincere vow of lifelong fidelity; and to the tragic loss of young lives in warfare.

One flute doubles on piccolo.
This piece appears to be unpublished since the only copy I've found is a reproduction of the manuscript that resides in the
Eastman School of Music Library. There isn't a mention of this piece in either the BMIC or the BL even though Langley is British.
No idea how Eastman ended up with the only copy to be found. However, the Wind ensemble literature, 2nd ed., rev. 1975 / by
Reynolds ... [et al.] says that the Composers Guild of Great Britain has a copy so I'll check that out.
I didn't find a nice biography page to link to for Langley, but I did find an interesting page for a memorial trust set up
after his unexpected death. The James Langley Memorial Trust page
indicates that Langley was a music producer at the BBC and was devoted to the Midlands
Youth Orchestra where he served in many roles, including music director.

The composer notes say: The Basho Trilogy is inspired from texts by Matsuo Basho who lived in Japan during the 17th
century and who is regarded as the master of haiku (or hokku), an epigrammatic Japanese verse form in 17 syllables.
In the piece there are no written dynamics and very few phrase marks. It is the composer's wish that the ensemble on its own
works these parameters out, according to their own likings. The movements may be performed separately or together.

Il colore del vento : per doppio quintetto di fiati / Massimo Lauricella.
[Genoa, Italy : M. Lauricella], 1991.
This piece has two unnamed movements played without a pause. It was originally played by a
student ensemble so it is accessible to a wide range of abilities. However, it needs a conductor.
Duration: ca. 10 min.
Available from the composer at: massimo.lauricella@fastwebnet.it (do not use the e-mail address at the site linked to his name above since it have been replaced by this one.)
I haven't found this for sale and suspect it hasn't been published. Levin is a professor Lake

This piece is op. 61 and is dedicated to an oboist friend, Erik Fernstrm. It was written in 1993,
commissioned by the Stersunds Serenadensemble and premiered at the summer festival in 1993 with Peter Ligetzas conducting.
Premiered November 19, 2005 by Kaleidoscope Wind in London, England.
The Dezet was composed in 1987. It has a fairly traditional four-movement form. There are
very few solo passages, and these tend towards being quite short. The pairs of instruments figure
very prominently, whether in unison, parallel motion, or various kinds of counterpoint, with the
purpose of distinguishing this piece from more conventional wind chamber works for one each of several
kinds of instruments.
Duration: 15 min.

Belwin Mills,
I found this listed in Wind ensemble literature, 2nd ed., rev. 1975 / by Reynolds ... [et al.] but it gave very little

lists of her works which I consulted.

Menuet badin : pour instruments à vent / G. Mellin.
Paris : Evette & Schaeffer, [18--?]
I have found two additional sources that indicate this was published by Andraud which was bought by Southern.
In the publication Wind chamber music by Barbera Secrist-Schmedes, this is listed as by "Melin, Bengt" who she says was
born in 1928 and was published by Southern Music but Southern has never heard of this piece and I think the composer is actually
G. Mellin. The Free Library of Philadelphia hold a dwq with this title and they list the composer as G. Mellin. I've been in
contact with them and they have verified that the instrumentation is standard dwq with no doublings. The FLP have an engraved
set of parts published in Paris by Evette & Schaeffer, they think sometime in the 1800s. I think this is more likely to be the
correct composer for this piece. I'm seeing now if I can get a copy to look at. If anyone in the Philly area would like to help, e-mail me!

I found mention of this piece on a site at the University of Southampton. It was cited on the Web site of Professor Mark

holds a copy in it's music colleciton.
I've been in contact with Mr. Baker about this piece but he had a computer crash and so was
unable at the time to answer questions about the piece. I hope I'll know more soon. (June 3, 2006)

Lior reflects on his impressions of NYC, on one hand the constant movement and things happening and on the other hand
the many tragedies for unfortunate people. The piece consists of four connected sections: Keep moving, Gutter People,
Getting busy and Keeping busy. The first and fourth movements refer to the continuous, breathless pace of life.
The third movement is a short satire about restless people. The second movement is inspired by the thousands of people who spend
all their life in the cellar of a restaurant or shop after immigrating from far away, only to serve the ever-hurrying people above them.
This piece was written in 1951 when North was a student at the Royal Academy of Music. At the moment the
composer does not have a copy of the piece since in 1951 he gave it to a colleague that was interested in
performing it and never got it back from that person. So, while it is not available at the moment perhaps someday
it will turn up in an archive or library somewhere or, more likely, in someone's attic! If it ever turns up perhaps
we'll be able to see how it stood the test of time.
Flute II doubles on piccolo, oboe II on English horn and clarinet II on bass clarinet.
Duration: 21 min.
I. Intrada -- II. Sonata -- III. Intermezzo -- IV. Antifon -- V. Rondo finale.
On the t.p. verso of the manuscript examined at BMIC on 22 Oct. 2007 there is suggested programme note:
The Intrada consists of a series of brief duets for the paired instruments punctuated by chorale-like passages for the
instruments so far introduced; it culminates in a short phrase of the three chords which will form the basis of the Rondo in the fifth
movement, but which here poises the music before leading directly into the next movement. Sonata. The melodic ideas presented
in this introduction are closely related to each other by depending exclusively on a single untransposed form (and its retrograde) of the
twelve note row on which the whole work is based.
The second movement is Sonata-like in its use of themeatic contrasts, recognisable development section of overt transformations of the
material, recapitulation and coda; it even retains a shadow of tonal structure in the manipulation of the transposition chosen
for various thematic events.
In the lightweight Intermezzo, material for the paired horns functions as a trio-like interpolation in the main texture and the slow
Antifon tends to exploit various groupings of the ensemble including verse-like recitatives for solo instruments. These two
movements are the only ones employing the auxiliary instruments, piccolo, cor anglais and bass clarinet.
The 5/8 phrase which runs throughout the Rondo-Finale is not so much a settled rondo theme as a variable idea seeking resolution,
which is eventually finds in the final bars, revealing its relationship to the ending of the Intrada; the various episodes are extended
versions of the brief duets with which the instruments were originally introduced at the beginning of the work. B.D.O.

which is correct so if you're interested in this you may want to check to see if it's horns or trumpets that provide the brass line.

Still life with wind : for double wind quintet / Daniel Palkowski.
Written in 1985 during his doctoral studies at Columbia University with George Edwards. Has not had a public performance.
Duration: ca. 6-7 min.
Doubles piccolo, English horn, bass clarinet and contrabassoon.
Not an easy piece, would need conservatory ability players to do it justice.
The style of work is hard to describe but the composer has some mp3s of some of his pieces on the Web that you can listen to
at: http://www.itp.nyu.edu/~dhp1. What I listened to reminded me of using music to evoke colors of sound, not much melody.
Reminded be of the music often heard in movies where a mood is trying to be created without a melody getting in the way of the action.
Might be availabe from the composer, he's looking for it at last contact.

Premiered October 23, 2005 by I Solisti del Vento during the Festival Music @ venture in DeSingel (Antwerp).
Mark is a bassoonist, teacher, orchestral player, and music camp organizer. He has several arrangements
for woodwinds published by Presser, and Alry Publications.
Composed in 1873 in Wiesbaden without a dedication.
Movement one, in greatly modified and expanded binary form, features a lovely, asymmetrically-phrased chorale melody (3+5) that is developed with excellent counterpoint and orchestration. The scherzo-like second movement is a rollicking Tarantella in compound time and quasi rondo form. The lyrical third movement, in rounded binary form (ABABA Coda), has a repeated section dramatically cast in the parallel minor mode. Movement four is an instrumental whirlwind in modified sonata form requiring virtuosic playing throughout.
(Note by Robert J. Garofalo from the CBDNA Website)
Originally written in 1989. This is a good arrangement for the most part. The first parts have the most fun,
so you could definitely play this if you have a group where the players on the second part didn't need a challenge.
In my double wind quintet we often picked out the movements that we liked and used them for opening and closing
pieces. Each movements stands by itself quite well.

Eclat : for double wind quintet / Joseph Santo.
1990.
Eclat, a French word meaning "burst," "explosion," "brilliance," is conceived as an overture or fanfare.
The ABA form uses a twelve-tone row, presented at times strictly, at other times combined with free, often chromatic, runs and swirls.
For standard double wind quintet with no doublings.
Basically tonal, using traditional melodic techniques with some mixed and assymetrical meters
in the 1st and last movements. The second movement is a stylistic tribute to British composer
Malcolm Arnold and borrows a formal-harmonic plan common to his English and Scottish Dances.
Four movements: I. q=108 -- II. Homage a Malcolm Arnold -- III. q=104 -- IV. q.=80.
Premiered November 3, 2004 by a group of Ohio State University students conducted by the composer
and coached by the bassoon teacher at OSU, Christopher Weait.
Originally written for an amateur group in Dayton, Ohio, it was composed during the summer vacation
from teaching public school. Matthew had been exposed to this medium while at University of
Cincinnati but being a trombone player could only get "in on the action" by composing. The group he
originally had in mind for the piece did not end up playing it, so it didn't get its premiere until
two years later when Matthew returned to school to get his graduate degree in composition.
The Malcolm Arnold connection was inspired by Matthew's experiences with that
neglected composer's music, especially a recording project in which he
participated in during the Spring of 2002 with the Sinclair Community College
Community Wind Symphony in Dayton, Ohio.
Suitable for a good amateur group or better. A professional group might well be able
to perform it without a conductor.

Sims-Williams is a professor of Iranian and Central Asian Studies and does music on the side. He's a horn player and has
written many compositions for wind instruments.
This is a beautiful three movement piece now available in published form from Boosey. Originally written in
2000 it has previously only been available from the composer. This piece could be played by a good high school group
as well as being a good work for professional players. The piece is melodic, with interesting harmonies and
good parts for all 10 voices. The second movement has a somewhat more difficult first flute part which would
require a more advanced player than the 2nd flute part. Very few tempo changes within movements which makes this piece
possible to do fairly well without a conductor.

Bob Spittal has woven three of Ned's melodies into a piece played with a break, including a section for improvisation in the middle.
Perhaps a bit more difficult than the Consort but very playable by any group of good players. This piece more than
the Consort needs a conductor. Bob did some revisions in 2007 and so what it now available is the revised version.

The dates often sited for Stumpf, 1740-1801 (New Grove Online) or, as in the preface, 1763-1801,
may in fact be for a totally different Stumpf. Regardless, he was a German composer and bassoonist
who wrote mostly instrumental music during the later half of the 18th century.

Fünf Bagatellen : für zehn Bläser, op. 102 / Jeno Takács.
Freiburg : Musikverlag Schulz, [1988], 1987.
1 score (39 p.) + 11 parts ; 30 cm. (Musik aus der Steiermark ; Heft 123)
Composed in 1977. Includes optional part for contrabassoon.
Jeno is an Austrian composer or Hungarian descent who worked for 20 years in the U.S.
His works made use of Hungarian and other folk musics and contemporary tonal, atonal, micro-tonal and aleatory
style. I haven't found a distributor for this piece yet, but a number of libraries in the U.S. have copies so
visit your public library and ask them to borrow it for you if you'd like to check it out.
Four dances that reflect the folk music of the small province in southern Albania called Lugubria.
Lugubria is a small province in southern Albania, whose Italianised name is the result of its many
years as a colony of the Venetian Republic - abruptly terminated by the Ottoman Turkish conquest of 1776. The local Albanian
majority and Greek-speaking minority have freely absorbed musical influences from these imperial cultures, borrowed musical ideas
from one another, and absorbed motifs and ideas from the small Roma and Macedonian populations in some parts of the provinces, as well
as from the former Ladino-speaking (mediaeval Spanish) Jewish population who lived there from their expulsion from Spain in 1493 until
the Nazis came. The result is a folk music of remarkable variety, but with the common element that the songs and dances frequently
end inconclusively. These four dances reflect the music of this little known region. (Hmm...)
Also there is a performance note: "The key to the successful performance of these pieces will be to establish the rhythms very
clearly - they are irregular and frequently changing, and the pieces will hang together if each player observes them carefully. Care
should be taken to observe the dynamics, since these may vary between parts in order to bring out the main line. In the third
Dance in particular, there is nearly always one instrument marked louder than the others, and it should be allowed to come through.
For oboe solo, oboe, 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and 2 bassoons.
The solo oboe represents Icarus, bassoons and horns his father whose warnings he ignores;
his increasing desire to fly and the unfortunate result are expressed in a freely tonal and vivid style.
Doubles piccolo, English horn and bass clarinet. Needs a bassoon with the low A extension.
Dedicated to composition professor at UT Austin, Dan Welcher.
It was originally composed in the spring of 2000, then arranged for chamber orchestra in 2002,
and finally revised in 2003 into its final form.
This is a difficult piece but tonal and melodic. It incorporates
stylistic techniques from Percy Grainger's catalogue of repertoire into the piece's musical sound.
The work consists of two main melodic lines, an original melody, which dominates the work, and as
a tribute to Percy Grainger, the other, Oh, Danny Boy (Irish Tune from County Derry). Both melodies
are employed through a wide variety of styles and textures. The final four bars embrace the two melodies
as well as two frequently used chromatic motives juxtaposed to an overwhelming, steadfast climax.
Christopher named this piece before he wrote it, and tells me that he endeavored to depict a
feather floating gracefully through the 'morning air' by taking the main melodic elements and
'floating' them through the different sections of the piece.
Duration: ca. 10 min., 30 sec.

La forza del destino / G. Verdi ; arrangement for double wind quintet by Fabrizio Francia.
Riflessi lunari : per doppio quintetto di fiati / Luigi Verdi.
Bologna : Agenda Edizioni, 1999.
A canon based on a pentatonic harmonic field, this piece uses each wind quintet as a unit.
The piece is divided into three parts. In the first part the first canon develops, and then the second one
opposite); in the second part the first canon develops at the same time as the second one;
in the third part at first the opposite appears and then the original one again.
Premiered April 18, 1993 in Bologna at the Accademia Filarmonica by the I Fiati di Parma, directed by Claudio Paradiso.
Commissioned in 2004 by the Southwark Consorts of Winds
The ambiguity of the title is intentional - is the hill walking or being walked on? - and the 'walk' refers to the structure of the piece. Sometimes the walk refers to a previous location; sometimes it moves in an unexpected direction, but there are unexpected reversals or changes of perspective as new vistas open up.
A small amount of musical material is constantly reinterpreted: in a sense it is the opening flute melody which goes on a walk.
If the players are seen as two quintets, the relationship between the two shifts from generally cooperative to generally antagonistic during the central section, and the resulting tension is not resolved.
This piece was originally written in 1926 in two different versions, one for piano (4 hands) and
one for string orchestra. In 1928 the composer arranged it for full orchestra. It takes its melodic material from the book
Orchesographie by Thoinot Arbeau, published in 1588 which explains the complexities of 16th century dance.
Although this arrangement is for double wind quintet it can be performed with slightly different scoring. Included in this
edition is a clarinet part which can substitute for the oboe II in movements 1, 4, and 6. A clarinet can also be substituted for
bassoon I if movement 4 is omitted.

Wellens, Stefan 1974-
Return of the dragon gets bitten : double wind quintet, 2003.
Duration: ca. 5 min.
There isn't a good biography but here's a little about Stefan. The composer and viola player
Stefan Wellens is Theater de Spiegels music coach. Wellens graduated from the Antwerp Conservatory,
where one of his projects had been to create a new music-theatre production. He composes and
plays for various theatre companies, including Moodlex, Wannes van de Velde and Mairan. He has
also composed for Emanon. Wellens explores possible interactions between rock and theatre.

the the late Lawrence Leonard for Morley College Wind Ensemble. It was these same artists who presented the world-premiere

revision, thereby extending the overall duration by five minutes. G.D.W. April 2002"--P. before the first p. of music.

Wilson, James, 1922-2005.
Duet for ten : op. 110 / Wilson.
1986.
Commissioned by the Ulysses Quintet and Falun Quintet with funds provided by the Arts Council.
Premiered on 11 May 1987 at St Stephen's Church, Mount Street Crescent, Dublin.
Premiered on April 16, 2008 in Oxford, England. Commissioned by Simon Payne and the Oxford
Sinfonia.
The piece is 3 movements wit the 2nd movement beginning and ending with a bassoon solo in
memory of the great English bassoonist, William Waterhouse, who died shortly after work began on
the piece. Guy attended the same school as William. The outer movements are reflections on the
witty, humorous side of Bill and the composer's own happy childhood memories.
This piece was written to celebrate the birth of the composer's first grandchild, in 2001.
It consists of three movements. The Intrada sums up the happy event of Sophia's arrival, and is in a forms A-B-A structure.
The Dance which follows taps into the rich culture of Sophia's Jamaican relations. The finale plays on the juxtaposition of two contrasted moods, first reflective and then happier.
This is a piece my group has worked on and find very rewarding to play. There are some sections where an
amateur group like mine needs a conductor to keep everything together. There are some places where the meter changes
frequently as well as the tempo. The piece has lovely melodies and harmonies and isn't terribly difficult. May even be
playable by an above average high school group.
Schwierigkeiten & Unfälle mit 1 Choral / Friedrich Zehm.
Mainz : B. Schott's Sohne ; London : Schott, c1976.
In this double wind quintet the members have to play a variety of instruments other than their
normal ones. Flute I (also alarm whistle), flute II (also fl. piccolo and rachet), oboe
I (also cyclon whistle), oboe II (also click-frog), Clarinet I in Bflat (also Clar. in Eflat and bird pipe),
Clarinet II in Bflat (also hooter), Horn in F (also cuckoo), Horn II in F (also rattle), Bassoon I,
Bassoon II (also contrabassoon). This one requires a conductor since they need to play triangle,
slapstick and toy-trumpet.
Flutes double piccolo and alto flute, one oboe doubles English horn, and one clarinet doubles bass clarinet.
Dedicated to cellist, Juan Hermida.
The three movements are played without pause. Certain sonorities and patterns recur throughout,
the developmental procedures and characters of each movement contrast sharply with each other, the first movement
is intense and stratospheric, the second languorous and somewhat sentimental, and the final movement scurrying
and enigmatic (and perhaps strangely familiar to those who know their Chopin).
Chamber opera for double wind quintet and piano (4 hands) and percussion played by the instrumentalists;
flutes double on piccolos, one oboe doubles English horn, and both clarinets double bass clarinet.
For voices, dwq and harp. This is a Christmas carol based on the text adapted from George Wither's
"Hymns and songs of the church", 1623. I can't seem to find a date for this but I found an arrangement for piano that is
dated 1947 so it is sometime around then.
Duration: 14 min.
This appears to be for rental only since Schirmer doesn't list a purchase price.
Chini, André, 1945-
Omniphobie : from the melodrama "Autisten" / André Chini.
Stockholm, Sweden : Edition Suecia, c1992.
1 score (89 p.)
For double wind quintet, string bass, and mezzo soprano.
Omniphobie is thought of as a scene in a French caf with the instruments being the habitus and old men who sit there aiming their fear and their hatred at the foreign, instrument-less girl who steps into the caf. Only after a while when she begins to sing and communicate, does their hatred of foreigners recede and she is accepted.

For piano solo with double wind quintet accompaniment.
This piece is a tonal composition that requires a professional level, accomplished pianist. The
wind parts, however, could be played by a good college or amateur group.

Lewis, Peter Tod, 1932-1982.
Sestina : for woodwind ensemble / by Peter Lewis.
New York : Composers Facsimile Edition, c1985.
Written in in 1962 and 1963.
A piano piece with the same title was finished in 1962 right before this piece was begun so this may be an arrangement of it but I haven't examined both scores
to figure it out. A few libraries in the US have this work including Universisty of Houston, University of Wisconsin at Madison, and
University of Illinois. Only Wisconsin has the parts.
There's not a good site to link to for a biography but here's some information about Peter. Peter Tod Lewis (1932-1982) was
born in Charlottlesville, Virginia, and spent his formative years on both coasts of the United States. He attended the University
of California at Santa Barbara and Brandeis University in Massachusetts, studying with Arthur Berger, Morton Feldman, Irving
Fine, and Lukas Foss. Lewis was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, Huntington Hartford Foundation, and MacDowell Colony,
and held residences at Southern Illinois University, the Instituut voor Sonologie in Utrecht, Netherlands, and Groupe de Musique
Experimentale in Bourges, France. In 1969 he became director of the Electonic Music Studios at the University of Iowa, a position
he held until his death from cancer in 1982.
Ponse, Luctor.
Euterpe : suite pour 11 instrumentistes : op. 37 / Luctor Ponse.

group 2 in the middle and group 3 on the right.
Duration: ca. 12 min.
Dedication reads: "pour Thom de Klerk et son ensemble". The final page of music indicates that it
was written in Loenersloot, Netherlands in March 1964.

An arrangement from the original for solo piano which follows Brahms's techniques of orchestration so as to capture as much as possible his idiomatic wind sound.

Doubles piccolo, bass clarinet, and English horn on some movements. Can be played using regular oboe and clarinet
if bass clarinet and English horn aren't available. Parts are included for both.
Serenade, op. 22 / Antonin Dvorak ; arranged for wind ensemble by Mark Popkin.
Amsterdam : Compusic, c1997.

combined Czech and German theater orchestras.

Overture Così fan tutte / W.A. Mozart ; arranged for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns,
2 bassoons and contrabassoon [by Johann Christian Stumpf].
Preface by Willem Middelhoven, dated 1990. The preface says that this is one of two arrangements Stumpf made for "larger
wind group", the other being of Don Giovanni. This edition is based on the manuscript parts in the Municipal Museum of the Hague.
For standard dwq with an additional contrabassoon.
Written in 2001, this was composed for the Horsham Wind Ensemble (New Harmonie).
These variations are played without a pause and are tuneful and inventive. It isn't too difficult,
playable by very good students or a good amateur group. It attempts to put into musical language the nine muses of the classical
period. Although this is a theme with variations, the presence of other formal structures such as sonata, rondo and dance
movements, often obscures this identity.

Born in 1917 in London, "Tony" Arnell is famous for his symphonic and film works.
His music is romantic in nature and approachable. The first movement of this piece is serious and reflective, the
second light and humorous, the third a lovely cantabile, and the final an exhilarating ballet featuring dance rhythms.
This piece was written in 1949 and was recorded by the London Baroque Ensemble with Karl Haas, to whom
the work is dedicated, directing.

The double bass in this piece is an independent part which is essential to the playing including
some solo passages. While the piece wouldn't be considered tonal, it has a strong sense of harmony
and many extended sections of consonance.
The composer says that it is difficult but playable. Some movements are easier and shorter than
others. Most suited to a good college group with adequate rehearsal time or professionals.
