MEBI 591 (1 credit)
(Crosslisted as CSE 590R)
Health Services I-132 (Rotunda classroom)
Wed, 3:30 - 4:20pm. Spring, 2008
Instructor / course lead: John Gennari
Our theme this quarter will be "Biosimulation that makes a difference". Thus, we will read about and discuss examples of research where mathematical modeling and biosimulation is actually applied in some domain. The classic example would be in a clinical application, where the results of a biosimulation would affect diagnosis or assist with some treatment decision.
Thus, I am planning that about half of the presentations over the quarter will be in Journal Club format -- where one of us critically evaluates and presents a recent journal article that might be an instance of "biosimulation that makes a difference". See my preferences on how to do a journal club presentation, and the mechanics of a journal club, or any teaching presentation. The other half will be more research-style presentations where folk present their current research work in progress, or use this group as a sounding board for new ideas.
More generally, this colloquia will look at a range of issues for Knowledge Representation and simulation modeling. Our aim is to think about and hopefully add formal semantics to biosimulation models.
