Chem 336:    Honors Organic Chemistry

Prof. Mike Gelb (office is 404B CHB).

Course web site: http://faculty.washington.edu/gelb/course_material.html

Office hrs:  Tues & Thurs 4-5 pm (if you have a conflict you can contact Gelb to setup a special time to meet).

Textbook:  Solomons & Fryhle ³Organic Chemistry² 8th Edition. and the Study guide and solution manual.

There will be 3 midtems (see dates below), and your lowest mideterm score will be dropped.  Each midterm is worth 100 points and the final is worth 100 points (300 points total).  If you miss the final exam you will get an Incomplete (UW rules), but you must have a valid excuse, otherwise you will get 0 pts on the final exam.  Grades will be based on a curve.  Each exam will be comprehensive:  exam II will cover from the beginning of the course up to exam II; exam III will cover from the beginning of the course to exam III and the final exam will cover the entire course. Material learned in Chem 335 is fair game for the exam although the exams will not dwell on Chem 335 material.

The class schedule is given below.  NOTE, we will not meet every MWThF (see below):

Class will meet on the following days:

Jan 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 19, 20, 21, 31.

Class will NOT meet on:

Jan 13, 17 (MLK Day), 26, 27, 28.

Exam I: Jan 24

Exam II:  Feb 11

Exam III:  Feb 25

Final Exam is 8:30 – 10:20 am on Mon., Mar 14.

Homework problems:  Do all problems in each chapter to be sure you understand the material, and additional, more ³exam-like²  problem sets will be handed out by Gelb (answers posted on the Chem 36 bulletin board).  Gelb has not taught this class before so there are no old exams to handout, but the handed out problem sets should give you a good idea of the kinds of problems to expect on the exams.
